Jul 7, 2007 - updated Jul 7th, 2007 8:29am
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

There were more than fireworks in the air as the action was hot and heavy at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway on an Independence Celebration Night presented by Cecil B. Arthur Enterprises. Neil McClanan of Moyock, NC got inverted to the front row of round 2 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 presented by BB&T and he made it pay off by leading every lap of the 40 lap affair to take home the victory. McClanan had to hold off the advances of Roland Mann and Austin Hubbard to take the win and set himself up for a chance at a $15,000 bonus should he sweep the next two races of the four race series. Also eligible for the bonus money is Roland Mann who won round one of the series.

“Man this feels awesome, we will be working real hard to take home some of that bonus money,” commented McClanan in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Austin Hubbard, Tom Cohick, Roland Mann and Stevie Long. Ben Bowie picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In other action Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA remained perfect in New Generation Racing Sprint Car action as he held off Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC for his sixth win. In the Charger 25 lap feature Bob terry of Stafford, VA worked his way from fifteenth to take home his fourth victory of 2007. In the All American 15 lap feature Dustin Owens of North, VA held off a last lap challenge by Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA to get his first win of 2007. And in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA held off Davis Lipscombe for his third win of the season.

29 entries took time trials for Round 2 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T and Brett Royal and McClanan leading the field to green with McClanan leading the first lap by inches at the line over Royal. On lap 9 Royal started to look inside Mclanan for the lead as the duo began to work traffic. McClanan had enough to hold off Royal and began to pull away a bit when caution fell again on lap 11.

On the restart Roland Mann and Austin Hubbard made it a three wide battle for third with Mann wrestling the position away with Cohick in tow. On lap 13 Cohick got under Mann on a restart as the two cars raced side-by-side back to the stripe with Mann holding on to the spot.

At halfway McClanan had worked his way to a seven-car length advantage with Mann, Cohick, Stevie Long and Hubbard the balance of the top five. Caution came out again on lap 27 for a spin by Wayne Carroll. On the restart Cohick jumped inside Mann for second as the two went at it side by side again until caution fell again on lap 28. On the restart Hubbard made it three wide in turn 1 with Hubbard emerging with second as they exited turn 4.

Hubbard began to real in McClanan and on lap 33 the races final caution came out closing the field up on the bumper of McClanan. On the restart McClanan got a great jump getting two car lengths by turn three. It was just enough for McClanan to hold off the hard charging Hubbard by a car length for the victory.

Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA made it six for six in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature. Folmar worked his way from his eighth place starting position taking the top spot from James Hawk of Maidens, VA on lap 7 and then holding off Daren Bolac for the victory.

Mary Ann Williams of Chester, VA made the biggest move of the race working her car to a third place finish. Eric Keck and Brian Lawson rounded out the top five. Daren Bolac picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.

In the Charger 25 lap feature ‘Bullet’ Bob Terry of Stafford, VA methodically worked his way from his fifteenth starting position and then battled three wide for the lead with Kyle Nelson and Tony Quade for the lead, taking it on lap 20.

The battle for the lead was fierce with Nelson and Quade swapping the lead twice before Terry joined in to take the lead and the eventual victory. Kyle Nelson, Tony Quade, John Kirby and Chris Tatum rounded out the top five. Kyle Nelson picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.

The All American 15 lap feature was a dog fight to the very end as Dustin Owens of North, VA held off a furious charge by Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA for the victory. Owens started six and used the outside to perfection to take the lead on the opening lap.

Over the entire 15 lap distance you could throw a blanket over the top six competitors as point leader Kevin Fletcher of Saluda, VA, Marty Coltrain of Richmond, VA and William Dunn of Tappahannock, VA all were in striking distance of the leader, many times three wide.

On the last lap Childress got under Owens as they barreled into turn 3 exiting turn 4 side by side. Childress couldn’t hold the bottom as Owens went on to record his first victory of 2007. Rounding out the top five were Childress, Kevin Fletcher, Marty Coltrain and William Dunn.

In the Truckin Thunder 30 lap finale Todd Traylor and J.R. Guy led the field to green with Traylor leading the opening circuit. A quick caution came out on lap 1 for a wreck in turn 4. On the restart Tim Shelton made it three wide for second with Roger Jamerson and Guy. Shelton emerged with the position and went directly after Traylor for the lead taking it on lap 3.

On lap 17 Davis Lipscombe caught Shelton in traffic and took the lead in turn 2 only to have caution come back out and relegate him back to second. From there Shelton took command of the event and cruised to his third win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Davis Lipscombe, Todd Traylor, Robert Kramer and Michael Roop. Todd Traylor picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.
