Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Langley Speedway reaches the halfway point of its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season this Saturday, July 7, when the track plays host to Toyota Night at the Races, presented by the Hampton Roads Toyota Dealers Association.

Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Dunkum’s Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); and, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m., while afternoon practice rounds get going at 2. Following the 4:15 drivers meeting, time trials get under way at 4:30. Very special pre-race activities begin at 6:30 and the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
• • •
The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

After taking off last night for the Fourth of July holiday, Langley Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesday” schedule resumes on July 11. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
• • •
This Saturday’s pre-race festivities will be highlighted by the wedding of Mary Jo Oliver and W.T. Snyder.

Greg Edwards remained second in this week’s Virginia state points rundown from NASCAR. He trails defending national champ Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford by 20 points, 424-404. With his win in last Saturday’s Late Model feature, Danny Edwards has jumped up to third in the standings, 60 behind Morris. Mark Wertz is eighth in the current rankings, 112 behind the leader.
In the national standings, Canadians Jean Francois Bouvrette and Guy Jubinville, both of Autodrome St. Eustache in St. Eustache, Quebec, hold the top two spots. Jamey Caudill of Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, N.C., is third.
Greg Edwards is 39th in the national Top 500, while Danny Edwards checks in at 55th. Other Langley regulars in the rankings include: Wertz (91st), Shawn Balluzzo (117th), Jeff Shiflett (166th), Anthony Warren (300th), Jeff Sampson (311th), Dean Shiflett (325th) and Craig Eastep (411th).
• • •
Danny Edwards (Late Model), Tommy Sweeney (Super Street) and Craig Firman (Super Truck) will try to extend their current winning streaks on Saturday night. Edwards and Sweeney will be going for their third straight wins, while Firman will be looking for his sixth consecutive victory. By track rules, though, all three drivers will start their features from no better than the outside of Row 4.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Grand Stock division has yet to produce a repeat winner this season. Through the first five events of ‘07, five different drivers have visited Victory Lane.
• • •
Changes to Late Model rules governing suspensions, intake manifolds and cylinder heads wil take effect for this weekend’s races. The intake manifold change — the approval for use of two more designs for GM engines — is expected to yield an extra 15-25 horsepower, hopefully allowing Chevy and Pontiac drivers to narrow the gap between themselves and the dominant Dodges.
So far this season, Dodge drivers Danny Edwards, Greg Edwards and Mark Wertz have combined to win all 11 races and lead all 900 laps, while setting the fast qualifying time for each event. On the seven occasions that all three drivers have been in the starting field this year, they have swept the top three finishing positions.

NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, July 14, with Allstate/Little GI Joe’s Night. That evening’s feature slate includes: Late Models, Grand Stocks, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs and Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
