Barker Wins Bailey’s 200

South Boston, VA. --

Adam Barker returned to Victory Lane Tuesday night, scoring the biggest win of his career in the 200-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division that highlighted the Bailey’s 200 racing program here at South Boston Speedway.

Barker, from Hurt, Va., drove away from the field in a 50-lap sprint that followed a 10-minute break in the race at the 150-lap mark and edged runner-up Jerame Donley of Winston-Salem, N.C. by about two seconds.

The win, Barker’s biggest of the season, was worth $5,000.

C.E. Falk of Virginia Beach, Va., the driver that snapped Barker’s seven-race win streak just over a week earlier, finished third with Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J. and former South Boston Speedway champion Drew Herring of Benson, N.C. rounding out the top five finishers.

Ford driver Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va., last year’s NASCAR Weekly Series national champion Philip Morris of Ruckersville, Va., David Triplett Jr. of Timberlake, N.C., Stacy Puryear of South Boston, Va. and Stephen Berry completed the top ten finishers.

Barker started on the pole and led the entire race with few challenges. After the final 50-lap segment of the race began Barker needed only 25 laps to build a lead of a quarter of a lap over the field.

He maintained the majority of that cushion the rest of the way as Falk and Donley battled for second place.

The win was Barker’s eighth of the season at South Boston Speedway and gave him eight wins in the season’s first 10 Late Model Stock Car Division races at the track.

The top 11 finishers in the 28-car field finished on the lead lap.

Willis Wins Limited Sportsman Race
Hometown drivers Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. and defending division champion Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. hit the jackpot at their hometown track Tuesday night.

Willis took lead after race leader Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. was sidelined in a five-car mishap on the 84th lap. From there, Willis held off Anderson in a two-lap sprint to the finish that followed the last of the race’s six caution flags to pick up his third win of the season in the 100-lap Limited Sportsman Division race.

Terri Marks of Capron, Va., who drives the Chevrolets maintained by the students and instructors of the Halifax County Motorsports Academy, finished third with Tiffany Daniels of Smithfield, Va. and Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

Pulliam, who had won his first pole position of the season in qualifying, led the first 83 laps but was sidelined when he and Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. crashed while in the midst of a battle for the top spot that included Willis.

Anderson, who had won the last three races in a row prior to this event, started mid-pack in seventh place per a track rule and found himself in second place and in a position to challenge Anderson after the multi-car mishap involving Pulliam and others.

Pulliam ended up finishing 12th.

Other Action

Joey Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Va.took the lead on the 25th lap and held on to win the Budweiser Pure Stock Division race that was shortened from its original 75-lap length to 38 laps as a result of a rash of time-consuming mishaps.

The win was Throckmorton’s third of the season and tied him with division points leader Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C. and Jarrett Milam of Ringgold, Va. for the most wins in the division this season.

Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va. finished second with pole starter Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va., Milam and Justin Tucker of Elon, N.C.rounding out the top five finishers.

The race was an exciting one that featured seven lead changes among Anderson, Francisco, Milam and Throckmorton.

Brad Arthur of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. took the lead from Cameron Patrick of Williamsburg, Va.on the 12th lap and held on the rest of the way to win the 25-lap race for the INEX Legends Cars Series.

Woody Howard of Chesapeake, Va., a former competitor in the Late Model Stock Car Division here at South Boston Speedway who has gone on to compete in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, finished third behind Arthur and Patrick.

Jason Higgenbothom of Chesapeake, Va. won the 20-lap race for the competitors in the MACKA Kart Series, edging Kevin Elliott of South Boston, Va. and Peter Fones for the victory.

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

NASCAR racing will return to South Boston Speedway on Saturday night, June 14 with the Embarq 150 racing program. Qualifying will start at 5:15 p.m. with the first race starting at 7 p.m.

The four-race program will be headlined by a 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division and will also include races for the Limited Sportsman Division, Budweiser Pure Stocks and the regional touring Legendary Ford Flatheads Racing Association.

Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. with the track’s Early Bird special admission of $8 for adults in effect until 6:30 p.m. Adult admission after that will be $10. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5. Kids ages 9 and under will be admitted free.
