Kenly, NC --
The summer temperature was hot, and the action was hotter Saturday night at Southern National Raceway Park. At the end of the night, Raleigh’s Deac McCaskill was the big winner, despite not capturing a checkered flag.
Corey Strickland bettered Scott Young for the pole by .001 seconds, and led the first 19 laps before succumbing to McCaskill and Young, before dropping back in the field. McCaskill would be the lead car on the late model train for the next 17 laps until Strickland shuffled back to the front. Stephen Rhodes would move to the front via some contact with Four Oaks’ Jamey Caudill and a shrewd pass on Strickland on lap 61. Rhodes would take the checkered flag for the first time this year, with Strickland Curtis Truex Jr., McCaskill and Caudill rounding out the top five.
The night’s second late model race, Curtis Truex Jr. took the pole after a three car invert from the finishing order of the first race. Within three laps, though, Stephen Rhodes’ 03 machine had taken the lead and pulled away. Rhodes would continue to lead until lap 60, when some contact between himself and a rapidly-dropping Jamey Caudill brought out the caution flag. This incited a small ruckus between the teams of Caudill and Rhodes, and when things were all said and done, both Rhodes and Caudill had been parked and disqualified for the second race. The final 15 laps were hotly contested, with Cam Strader looking all over the track for a way around Truex Jr., but having to settle for second. Curtis Truex Jr. would win his second race of the year, with Strader, McCaskill, Tommy Lemons Jr. and Strickland rounding out the top five.
McCaskill’s two top fives, coupled with Caudill second race disqualification, puts McCaskill back on top in points. Benson’s Drew Herring catapults to second, 81 points out of the lead. Caudill falls to third, with Derek Lee and Truex Jr. rounding out the top five in points.
In the night’s limited late model event, Lance West would lead every lap from the pole to take his fifth win in eight starts and pad his point lead. PJ Flowers, currently second in points, hit the wall with nine laps to go, dropping him 171 points behind West. Flowers’ incident would shuffle Doug Barefoot to third, Stacey Pate fourth and Joe Heigl fifth.
Earlier in the evening, the INEX Legends series took to the high banks for the first time in June with Brad Arthur leading every lap, but only winning by a car length on second place Billy Gomez. William “Sparky” West would hang on for third place. In Street Stocks, Greg Barnette would work through the field after getting shuffled to the back but ran out of time, falling to pole sitter Kevin Benton. Stacey Pate would wind up third.
In the 4 Cylinder division, it was Greg Whitley leading flag to flag over Lee Kozikowski. Josh Lamm finished third for his best finish of the year. In UCARs, Ashley Smith passed Wayne Boone to win and open her points lead over third place finisher Daniel Tugwell.
Southern National will be racing again next Saturday, June 30 with a full schedule of racing. The night’s action will feature a 150 lap Kinston Automotive Late Model race, as well as Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, INEX Legends, UCARs and the Papa Jacks Thunder Cars.
