Bud 100 Late Model race tops Saturday night bill Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Five events, including a 100-lapper for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models, are slated for this Saturday, June 23, as Langley Speedway continues its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Budweiser Night at the Races.
In addition to the big Late Model tilt, Saturday’s lineup includes: Dunkum’s Machine Shop/Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice begins at 2. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. Pre-race festivities, highlighted by a demonstration of high-flying R/C vehicles from Hobbytown USA, get under way at 6:30. The evening’s first feature contest goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session on Thursday, June 21. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesdays” schedule continues on June 27. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
Looking a couple weeks ahead, the series will take off for the Fourth of July holiday, resuming on July 11.

Congratulations to John Bechtel, who was selected as Langley Speedway’s “#1 Dad” during last Saturday’s Father’s Day weekend program. He was nominated by his son, UCAR driver Chris Bechtel.

Despite his win in last Saturday’s Late Model feature, Greg Edwards slipped from first to second in NASCAR’s latest Virginia state points rundown. He trails defending national champ Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford by 18 points, 348-330. Danny Edwards ranks sixth in the state title chase with 284 points.
In the national standings, a pair of Canadians have climbed to the top of the heap — Guy Jubinville and Jean Francois Bouvrette, who both compete at Autodrome St. Eustache, a 3/8-mile oval in Quebec.
Langley regulars in NASCAR’s national top 500 include: Greg Edwards (42nd), Danny Edwards (75th), Mark Wertz (130th), Shawn Balluzzo (151st), Jeff Shiflett (210th), Anthony Warren (343rd), Jeff Sampson (384th), Craig Eastep (409th), Dean Shiflett (428th), Albert Falk (443rd) and Mark Claar (452nd).

Kevin Alves will try to keep his unbeaten record intact in Saturday’s UCAR 25-lapper. He has won the first five races of the season. Since he won the final race of ‘06, his overall streak stands at six.
To capture the victory in this week’s feature, Alves will have to overcome a less-than-prime starting spot. By track rules, because of his string of consecutive wins, he’ll roll off the grid in no better than the eighth position.
It’ll be Alves’ second opportunity to mount a charge from the outside of Row 4. He won from the eighth spot on May 19. It was a close shave, though, as took the lead with only two laps to go.
• • •
There was a bit of confusion before and after last Saturday’s UCAR race as a few competitors believed that Alves should have been deployed to the eighth starting position for that event.
To clarify the rule, if a driver wins two races in a row, he or she can start no better than eighth in the next race. If he or she wins that race, as Alves did on May 19, then the slate is wiped clean and the cycle begins again with that driver’s starting spot in races #4 and #5 determined by his or her qualifying results.
At the most, a driver can only be relegated to the eighth starting spot every third race.
• • •
Like Alves, Craig Firman and Jeff Sampson will be trying to maintain winning streaks in this week’s Super Truck and Wolf Truck race, respectively. Both drivers have opened the season with four straight victories and will be going for #5 on Saturday.
If either, or both, of them win on Saturday night, then the “two wins in a row” rule will be in effect for their next race. Both Firman and Sampson have already cleared that obstacle once this season.
• • •
NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, June 30, with Miss Utility Night at the Races. That evening’s feature lineup includes: Late Models, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends, UCARs, Wolf Trucks and Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.
The Speedway will also get an early jump on the upcoming Independence Day holiday, treating fans to a breathtaking fireworks display.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
