Kenly, NC --
Before Saturday night, Jamie Yelton had not turned a competitive lap on the high banks of Southern National Raceway Park. By the end of the night, Yelton had more wins than everyone but the top two points leaders.
Points leader Jamey Caudill started the night from the pole, and would lead the first 28 laps before succumbing to Yelton’s charge. After swapping the top spot multiple times, Yelton grabbed the lead for good. Caudill managed to hang on for second, with Scott Young, Deac McCaskill and outside front-row starter Corey Strickland rounding out the top five.
In the second Late Model race, it was more of the same with Yelton passing Raleigh’s Deac McCaskill for the lead on lap 18 and not letting up for the rest of the evening. Cam Strader gave a hard charge, but got caught up in traffic and would have to settle for silver. Scott Young would take third for the second time in the evening, Tony Cox would finish fourth for his third top five of the season, and Drew Herring would round out the top five.
When it was all said and done, Four Oaks’ Jamey Caudill added onto his advantage over Deac McCaskill, which is now 27 points. Drew Herring is third, 75 points off, with Derek Lee holding fast in fourth, and Mooresville’s Scott Young fifth. The top ten in points are separated by a mere 203 points.
In Limited Late Models, Lance West continued his season-long dominance, passing PJ Flowers on lap 27 and holding on for the last 23 laps to win his fourth race in seven attempts. Flowers would end up second, and Ron Langley held off Brandon Hobbs for fourth. West’s win gives him a 132 point lead on second place Flowers. Ron Langley is third.
Stacey Pate won from the pole in the Street Stock division, bettering Kevin Benton and point leader Greg Barnette for his first win of the season. Barnette continues to lead in points, but has Kevin Benton in his tracks, only 27 points back. In 4 Cylinders, Greg Whitley won his second race of the year, while Don Basinger scored his seventh top five in seven races, taking second. Kevin Pierce held off Jeremy Bohne for third.
Earlier in the night, Paul Bryant was credited with a win in the Papa Jacks Thunder Cars after Wayne Goss was disqualified for his car being too low. Patrick Monterone was second, and Russell Din third. Ashley Smith won her third UCAR race of the year, with Daniel Tugwell and Tommy Wilder rounding out the top three.
