Med Express/Kids Night set for this Saturday night Wednesday, June 13, 2007

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Five feature races are planned for this Saturday, June 16, as Langley Speedway celebrates Father’s Day and the end of the school year with Med Express Urgent Care/Kids Night, the ninth event on the track’s 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series calendar.
Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (50 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); and, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice rounds get under way at 2. Following the 4:15 drivers meeting, time trials begin at 4:30. Pre-race activities, featuring the announcement of Langley’s “#1 Dad,” start at 6:45. The green flag waves over the evening’s first race at 7.
For Kids Night, all children 12 and under are admitted free. The first 700 kids through the gate will get a free hot dog, compliments of Langley Speedway and Tyson Foods. Also, Bubbles the Clown will be hosting fun games (with prizes) for the youngsters. Aard-Alltuf Screenprinters is providing commemorative T-shirts for the event, which will be given away throughout the evening.
Adult tickets are $10. Military members (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session on Thursday, June 14. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesdays” schedule continues tonight. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
Reportedly, the highlight of last week’s Wednesday night extravaganza came when one competitor planted his Honda S2000 roadster in the wall. The 30-day tags on the car were due to expire this week.

There’s still time to enter your favorite father in the Speedway’s “#1 Dad” contest. Just write a brief paragraph why your pop is tops and e-mail it to <michael@langley-speedway.com> or fax it to 757-865-0072. The winner will receive free admission to this Saturday’s racing program, prizes and recognition during pre-race festivities. Please be sure to include your name and phone number with your entry.

Greg Edwards retained the top spot in this week’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Virginia state rankings. He holds a slight edge over Adam Barker of South Boston Speedway and defending national champ Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway. Edwards has accumulated 300 points to 296 for Barker and Morris.
Edwards picked up a fourth-place finish in South Boston’s Late Model Stock Car feature last Saturday night.
While Edwards has combined with his brother, Danny, and Mark Wertz to dominate Late Model action at Langley, Barker has been a one-man wrecking crew at SoBo, winning seven in a row. Like Langley’s “Dodge Boys,” Barker is also the target of a $1,000 bounty.
In NASCAR’s national rankings, Rodney Cook, who is running full schedules at South Boston and Ace Speedway, held onto first place for another week. Greg Edwards is 28th in the latest rundown. Danny Edwards is 70th, while Wertz and Shawn Balluzzo check in at 141st and 157th, respectively. Jeff Shiflett is 209th.

Kevin Alves will try to maintain his unbeaten record in this weekend’s UCAR 25-lapper. He has won this season’s first four races. Dating back to his victory in last fall’s Virginia State UCAR Championships, his overall winning streak stands at five.
• • •
At the other end of the “streak” spectrum, the INEX Legends division has produced three different winners in three races. Over those three events, eight different drivers have led at least one lap. Don McLaughlin, the division’s most recent winner, is the only driver to have led in all three races.

Casey Wyatt’s rude introduction to the NASCAR Busch East Series continued last Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn.
According to a press release from his PR director and sister, Chrissy Ward, the former Langley Late Model standout was turning just his second practice lap on the half-mile oval when his throttle hung open at the end of the backstretch, sending him for a hard ride into the outside wall.
The team had already had to rearrange its ‘07 plans after Wyatt got crunched on a mid-race restart in his series debut at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on April 28, so this latest setback was particularly hard to take. According to Ward’s release, all Busch East plans have been put on hold while the team assesses its situation.

A 100-lap Late Model race tops the bill as NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, June 23, with Budweiser Night. The Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks and UCARs round out the lineup.
Also, draw a big, red circle around June 30 on your calendar, as the Speedway will get a jump on the Independence Day holiday with a spectacular fireworks display.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
