NEWTON, NC – It started with a top-five and ended with a ‘DNF’ (Did Not Finish); so easily is the first half of the season summed up for TMS Racing at the famed Hickory Motor Speedway. The family based team out of Newton, North Carolina had reason to be pumped up, starting off the season with a fifth place finish, but a string of wreckage dampened spirits and ultimately sidelined the team for much of the first half of the 2007 race season. Luckily, the second half is just starting.
“We started the season off in 5th place. We knew we had a good car and we were ready to keep working on the setup. It was only a matter of time before we got the car headed in the right direction,” commented team driver Chris Lewis late last week. Then four straight races provided four badly beaten racecars. They limped home in there second race to a 7th place finish, then 11th, then an 8th place finish, all with heavy damage. “Our car was struggling in qualifying, but we were good on longer runs,” unfortunately that got us caught up in several wrecks. The final blow came in late April, after qualifying 6th, a wreck just 20 laps in brought things to an idle.
“We so easily could have looked at the negative side,” continued Lewis regarding the fact that his family’s team suffered through four straight wrecked cars. “That’s not what we are about. We sat down, reevaluated our program and knew that there were changes we could make to better our car. So we decided to step back, make our changes, and come back at it when we know we have a winning car every time we unload.”
The twenty-two year old spoke passionately about the team’s status, “we want to win. We have been in this business for a long time and never had winning equipment. That’s all changed; we have spent the last several years building up a Late Model Stock Car program and it’s a great program with a super car thanks to SRP. But it’s about not settling, and we have a car that can win, we just have to be patient and work hard to take our setup to the next level.”
As the summer sun gets hotter two brothers and their dad hope to do the same. “We’ll test and test until we know we have a car that can go the distance and win races. We knew we needed to make changes early on but we were spending every minute working on repairing our car. When we get back to the track we’ll have a car that can win,” smiled crew chief Tyler Lewis.
TMS Racing is currently planning to visit Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, North Carolina for the Rusty Harpe Memorial 250 on July 4th (formerly the Firecracker 250). TMS Racing last raced at Caraway with their Late Model Super Truck, recording a top-five and several top-ten finishes.
