Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA: Danny Edwards goes for 3rd straight Late Model win this Saturday

Thursday, June 7, 2007

Late Model points leader Danny Edwards will be shooting for his third straight victory this Saturday, June 9, as Langley Speedway continues its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule with Craftsman/Wolf Contractors Night.
This week’s five-race lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps); and, Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. with afternoon practice beginning at 2. The drivers meeting is slated for 4:15, followed by qualifying at 4:30. Pre-race festivities, highlighted by a U.S. Navy re-enlistment ceremony, start at 6:45. The evening’s first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
• • •
The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.
• • •
The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesdays” schedule continues on June 13. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
• • •
As noted above, Danny Edwards will try to capture his third straight victory in Saturday’s 75-lap Late Model feature. By track rules, since he’s won the last two races, he can start no better than eighth. After his back-to-front run on the way to the win in last weekend’s event, though, overcoming a less-than-ideal starting spot shouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle for Edwards.
Super Truck driver Craig Firman and Wolf Truck driver Jeff Sampson will also be looking to extend season-opening winning streaks in their respective divisions. Both Firman and Sampson will be going for their fourth wins in a row on Saturday.
• • •
And, of course, that $1,000 bounty is still waiting to be collected by the first non-Mopar driver who can tame the Dodges of Danny and Greg Edwards and Mark Wertz. The “Dodge Boys” have combined to win the season’s first seven races. They’ve also led all 575 laps and finished 1-2-3 five times.
• • •
Greg Edwards has edged to the top of the heap in NASCAR’s Virginia state points rundown. He leads Adam Barker of South Boston Speedway by 10 points, 262-252. Danny Edwards ranks fourth in the current listing, while Wertz is ninth.
In the national standings, South Boston’s Rodney Cook, who has already run 19 races, leads the way over Andy Loden of Hickory Motor Speedway. Greg Edwards is the top-ranking Langley regular, at 31st. Danny Edwards is 57th. Other Langley drivers in the top half of the top 500 include Wertz (126th), Shawn Balluzzo (148th), Jeff Shiflett (190th) and Anthony Warren (221st).

NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, June 16, when the track hosts Med Express Urgent Care Night at the Races. That evening’s lineup features Late Models, B&C Seafood Modifieds, Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends and E-Z Auto Rental UCARs.
In honor of the Father’s Day holiday, the Speedway is holding its annual #1 Dad contest. To enter your favorite father, just write a brief paragraph telling why he’s the greatest and e-mail it to Michael Hill at <michael@langley-speedway.com> or fax it to 757-865-0072. The contest deadline is Thursday, June 14, at 4 p.m.
The winner will receive free admission to the June 16 racing program, a handsome assortment of prizes and will be recognized during pre-race activities. Please be sure to include a name and phone number with your entry.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
