Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Several winning streaks will be on the line this Saturday, June 2, as Langley Speedway continues its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Whelen Engineering/EMS Night at the Races.
Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (50 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, the Pro 6 Series (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice gets under way at 2. The drivers meeting is slated for 4:15, followed by time trials at 4:30. At 6:30, fans will be allowed on the track to meet and greet their favorite drivers and get an up-close look at emergency vehicles from local departments. Following a parade lap from the EMS vehicles, the evening’s first feature event gets the green flag at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
For this week’s event, fire/EMS personnel in uniform will be admitted free. Others will receive a $2 discount by displaying their badges.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesdays” schedule continues on June 6. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
Beginning with the June 6 program, points will be kept, based on the results of each week’s “Time Attacks.” At the end of the season, the top five in the standings will split a $2,500 points fund, provided by Casey Cycle City, DuctWorx, Maaco of Hampton, eDealer Services and the Speedway.

After taking off the month of May, the Modifieds will return to action this Saturday with Joe Scarbrough trying for his third straight win. By track rules, though, he’ll roll off the grid from no better than the eighth starting spot.
Scarbrough, who won the season’s first two races in pole-to-checkers fashion, can draw inspiration from Kevin Alves (UCAR), Craig Firman (Super Truck) and Jeff Sampson (Wolf Truck). Those three drivers all overcame less-than-ideal starting positions to score their third consecutive victories.
• • •
Speaking of Alves, he’ll be going for his fourth straight win to open the season in Saturday’s UCAR race. Actually, including last year’s Virginia State UCAR championship event, Alves will be trying to run his overall winning streak to five.
• • •
Tim Layne will try to maintain his perfect Langley record in the Pro 6 feature. Layne has been the victor in the series’ first two stops at the Speedway this year.
• • •
And, of course, all eyes will be on the “Dodge Boys” — Danny Edwards, Mark Wertz and Greg Edwards — as they attempt to maintain their dominance over the Late Model division. Through six events, those three drivers have divided all the race wins between themselves and have led all 500 laps run to date. A $1,000 bounty is still up for grabs to the first non-Mopar driver who can outrun the Dodges to the checkered flag.
• • •
Greg Edwards, who finished sixth in last weekend’s Late Model Stock Car feature at South Boston Speedway, ranks second in NASCAR’s current Virginia state point standings. He trails 2006 national champ Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford by two points, 232-230. Danny Edwards is Langley’s other representative in the statewide top 10. He is sixth in the rundown, 32 behind Morris.
In the NASCAR Top 500 national rankings, Jamey Caudill of Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, N.C., tops the current listing. Greg Edwards is 44th, while Danny Edwards is 69th. Shawn Balluzzo, Wertz and Anthony Warren also made the top 200, at 134th, 158th and 185th, respectively.
• • •
NASCAR competition at Langley Speedway continues on Saturday, June 9, with Craftsman Night at the Races. That evening’s lineup includes: Late Models, Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks and Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
