Truex Jr., Caudill Tame New Southern National Asphalt
May 28, 2007 - updated May 28th, 2007 9:05am

Kenly, NC --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The new asphalt was down and the speeds were up Saturday night at Southern National Raceway Park. In the first night of racing since SNRP was repaved, Curtis Truex Jr. made a remarkable comeback from both a prerace engine change and last-place starting spot to win the first of two Kinston Automotive Late Model races.

Dunn’s Corey Strickland took the pole with a time of 14.849, and led the first lap before giving way to JR Motorsports’ Scott Young. Young would hold the lead for the next 13 laps before track owner Kirk Leone took control. Leone would then dominate for the next 56 laps, all while Truex Jr. was slowly working through the. A lap 69 wreck of John Whaley’s Chevrolet would bring out a caution and bunch up the field. Leone would then lead the next two laps, until with four laps to go, Truex Jr. made his move and held on to win his first race of 2007. Derek Lee, Drew Herring, Young and Leone (who had lost a clutch and was restarting in fourth gear) rounded out the top five.

“We’ve had a rough week, had to change a motor and really had to work hard to get up here and have a chance to win” said Truex Jr., cousin of Nextel Cup driver Martin Truex Jr, about his win.

The second late model race of the evening saw Truex Jr. dominate the first 35 laps of a race shortened to 50 laps due to tire wear. A mid-race pit put Goldsboro’s Stephen Rhodes in the catbird seat for the next six laps, where he was passed by Scott Young who looked poised to win. With one lap to go, Young’s car chief Jamey Caudill made a pass underneath to win his third SNRP race of 2007. Young was relegated to second, with Rhodes taking third, Michael Rouse fourth and Corey Strickland fifth.

Caudill’s win, combined with a pair of 13th place showings for the Deac McCaskill race team gives Jamey Caudill the points lead in the Kinston Automotive Late Model division for the first time in 2007. McCaskill falls to second, 11 points behind, with Derek Lee, Drew Herring and Ryan Rhodes round out the top five.

In Limited Late Models, Lance West dominated from flag to flag to win his third race of the year. PJ Flowers finished second after a fourth place start, and Ron Langley finished third for his fourth top five of the year. With his win, and Brandon Hobbs’ lap 27 wreck, Lance West extends his points lead over Hobbs. Langley is third.

Earlier in the evening, Kevin Benton held off Donald Chase by .05 seconds to win the Street Stock race. Points leader Greg Barnette overcame falling to the back of the field to finish third. In 4 Cylinders, Greg Whitley led the first 17 laps before falling victim to mechanical troubles. Chad Wall overtook the lead and held on for his first win this year, Lee Kozikowski fought hard but finished second, and Don Basinger finished third for his 6th top five in 6 races.

Ashley Smith made a pass with five laps to go to win the UCAR race, holding of Brandon Clements and Ronnie Devera. Russell Din won his second race in four attempts, holding off a hard-charging Wayne Goss to win the Papa Jacks Thunder Car race. A loose battery cable ended Goss’ evening early, allowing Forrest Tanner Jr. and Paul Bryant to take second and third.

Southern National Raceway Park will be running again this coming Saturday, June 2, with a full schedule of action. The night’s racing will feature twin 75 lap Kinston Automotive Late Model races, as well as the Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, UCARs and Thunder Cars. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for ages 8-17, and free for kids 7 and under. Military personnel admission is $13 with a valid military ID. As a special promotion, all children 12 and under are free with a coupon that can be printed on the track’s website and a paid adult.
