"New" Southern National Ready for Racing

“New” Southern National Ready for Racing Memorial Day Weekend

The high banks of Southern National Raceway Park are some of the toughest to get around in the southeast. Memorial Day weekend, there will be another hurdle to overcome: The new asphalt.

As if the 4/10 mile track itself hadn’t been difficult enough to navigate, with the high banks, tight corners and its stiff competition. Drivers now will have to deal with increased speeds, different tire wear, and a second groove of racing. The weather has also changed much in the last month, and with the sun up longer, the track will warm up more, tire wear is going to be different, and speeds promise to be up. With drivers already putting down times in the low 15 second range before the paving, speeds promise to up and fall in the sub-15 second range.

The big question on everyone’s mind going into this weekend is: “How is the new asphalt, as well as increased track temperature, tire wear and new setups going to affect the drivers? Will points leaders Deac McCaskill, Lance West, Greg Barnette, and Lee Kozikowski be able to pad their leads, or will the change in setups help out a Jamey Caudill or Drew Herring, or even level the playing field enough where newer drivers to the track can make an impact? With six drivers in the top 10 nationally, Southern National Raceway Park has become one of the toughest tracks to win at, so it remains to be seen how the new pavement will affect the field at large.

Some of those questions will be answered this Thursday, May 24, as the track will hold an open practice for all competitors. Practice will run from 4:00 PM until nightfall, with gates opening at 3:00 PM. Grandstand admission for the practice is free, with a $10 for pit admission.

Race day is Saturday, May 26. The night will feature dual 75 lap races in the Kinston Automotive Late Model division, as well as action from the Limited Late Models, UCARs, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, and Papa Jacks Thunder Cars. Gates open at 4:00 PM, with the green flag flying at 7:00 PM. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for youths 8-17, and free for kids 7 and under. Military personnel admission is $13 with a valid military ID. For Memorial Day Weekend, all children 12 and under are free with a paid adult and coupon printed from the Southern National website.
