NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Update: Hampton Roads Harley-Davidson Night set for this Saturday Wednesday, May 23, 2007

(May 23) — A five-race program is slated for this Saturday, May 26, as Langley Speedway celebrates the Memorial Day weekend with Hampton Roads Harley-Davidson Night, the sixth event on its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series calendar.
This week’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); Wolf Contracting Wolf Trucks (25 laps); and, Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice begins at 2, followed by the drivers meeting at 4:15 and time trials at 4:30. Pre-race activities get under way at 6:30 and the first feature race goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
• • •
The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session on Thursday, May 24. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.
Also, a Super Street drivers meeting has been called for Thursday at 7:30. The gathering will be held in Champ’s Corner, located behind the main grandstand.

The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesdays” schedule continues this evening. The program includes “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun begins at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

With sponsorship participation from Casey Cycle City, DuctWorx, Maaco of Hampton and eDealer Services, Langley Speedway’s Wednesday night racers will have an opportunity to compete for some serious, end-of-the-season cash.
Beginning on June 6, points will be awarded based on the results of each week’s “Time Attacks” — 50 points to the fastest driver, 48 points to the second-fastest, 46 for third, etc.
The top five in the standings at season’s end will split a $2,500 points fund — $1,200 for first place, $700 for second, $300 for third, $200 for fourth and $100 for fifth. Drivers will collect their prizes and be recognized at Langley Speedway’s Annual Awards Banquet.
Also, DuctWorx and Kenny’s Plumbing and Mechanical have posted an additional $200 bonus for the season’s best “Time Attack” performance.

The bounty hunters came up empty-handed last Saturday as Dodge drivers Greg Edwards, Mark Wertz and Danny Edwards swept the top three spots in the 100-lap Late Model feature. A $1,000 bonus awaits the first non-Dodge driver to grab a checkered flag and end the Mopar domination. So far, the “Dodge Boys” have posted five wins, leading every lap of every race.
• • •
Veteran Langley competitor Bill Mullis suffered a broken right arm (in two places) and lacerations when his driveshaft rattled loose on lap 17 of last Saturday’s Pro 6 Series event. He underwent surgery on Monday and faces more procedures in the days ahead.
Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery, Bill!

Super Truck driver Craig Firman and Wolf Truck driver Jeff Sampson will be looking to extend their two-race winning streaks on Saturday. To accomplish that task, they’ll both have to come from back in the pack. By track rules, any driver who wins two in a row may start no better than eighth (or last in a field of less than eight) in the next race.
UCAR points leader Kevin Alves overcame that hurdle to score his third straight victory in last Saturday’s 25-lapper.

NASCAR competition at Langley Speedway continues on Saturday, June 2, with Whelen Engineering/EMS Night at the Races. That evening’s lineup includes: Late Models, B&C Seafood Modifieds, Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs and the Pro 6 Series.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
To learn more about Langley Speedway and its 2007 schedule of events, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or consult the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
