Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA: Late Model 100-lapper tops Armed Forces/Nextel Night bill this Saturday

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Thursday, May 17, 2007

— A 100-lap feature for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models highlights a five-race card this Saturday, May 19, as Langley Speedway continues its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Armed Forces Night presented by Nextel.
In addition to the big Late Model shootout, Saturday’s lineup includes: Med Express Urgent Care Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, the Pro 6 Series (25 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. and afternoon practice begins at 2. Following the 4:15 drivers meeting, qualifying gets under way at 4:30. Pre-race festivities commence at 6:30 and the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
For this Saturday’s event, tickets for military members — active or retired, with ID — are $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session this evening, Thursday, May 17. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.
In appreciation for their assistance with track-drying efforts last Saturday night, all UCAR drivers will be admitted to tonight’s practice free of charge.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

With his win in last Saturday’s Late Model race, Danny Edwards has seized a commanding 22-point lead in the division standings. His cause was boosted by the absence of his brother, Greg, who finished ninth in a 150-lap Late Model Stock Car event at South Boston Speedway, and by Mark Wertz’s early exit from the race at Langley.
In the current points rundown, Danny Edwards leads with 192. Wertz and Shawn Balluzzo are tied for second with 170 points apiece. Anthony Warren and Jeff Shiflett are fourth and fifth, respectively, while Greg Edwards dropped from first place to sixth.
• • •
Through four races, Langley’s “Dodge Boys” — the Edwardses and Wertz — remain “unbeaten and unscored upon.” The trio has accounted for all four race wins and one of the three has been out front for every lap of every race.
That dominance has inspired two anonymous fans to post a $600 bounty to the first driver who can break the Mopar stranglehold. To collect the cash, though, a driver will have to beat the Dodges, not just beat ON ‘em. At least one of the Dodges must still be running and in contention at the end of the race for the payoff to be made.
• • •
That money may change hands this weekend, as car owners James and Mary Lou Long plan to team their driver, Anthony Warren, with his dad, seven-time Langley track champ Phil Warren, in a pair of Chevys for Saturday’s race.
A third driver — Casey Wyatt, a six-time Late Model winner last season — is also slated to join the Long team for selected events in the coming weeks.

After receiving heavy damage to their only car in the April 28 season opener for the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series, Casey Wyatt and the Wyatt Motorsports team have had to do some shuffling of their ‘07 Busch East plans.
The team won’t be competing at Iowa Speedway this weekend, as originally scheduled. Instead, their next event will be at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn., on June 8.
Other races on their reconfigured calendar include: New Hampshire International Speedway on June 29; Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in Mansfield, Ohio, on Aug. 25; and, Dover International Speedway on Sept. 21.
• • •
Congratulations to Dorothy McGuire, who was recognized as Langley Speedway’s #1 Mom during pre-race activities for last Saturday’s Mother’s Day Eve program. She was nominated by Modified driver Steve McGuire.
• • •
The Speedway’s “Wild Wacky Wednesdays” schedule continues on May 23 with “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock), 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track) and a burnout competition.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the action gets under way at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
• • •
NASCAR competition at Langley Speedway continues on Saturday, May 26, when the track kicks off the Memorial Day weekend with Hampton Roads Harley-Davidson Night.
That evening’s lineup features: Late Models, Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Super Trucks, Wolf Contracting Wolf Trucks and Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
