Virginia Motor Speedway News
The Doctor’ dominates in Super Dirtcar Series sanctioned Paul Sawyer Memorial at Virginia Motor Speedway
May 6, 2007 - updated May 6th, 2007 11:19am
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

‘The Doctor’ Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY made his first house call to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway count as he passed Dale Planck on lap 14 to take the lead and then held off the challenges of Matt Sheppard in the closing laps to take home victory in the Advance Auto Parts Super Dirtcar Series sanctioned first annual Paul Sawyer Memorial 60.

Johnson pocketed $6,000 for his 62nd career Series win in the 60-lap Paul Sawyer Memorial presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. that was slowed by just four caution periods.

“The car was really working for me up on the cushion, I hope we can figure out what we have been doing right, this is four races with this car and four wins,” commented Johnson in victory lane.

Dale Planck paced the 32-car field before fifth-place starter Johnson forged the final lead change on lap 14. Sheppard began 13th on the grid yet moved in to pressure Johnson with a third of the race scored. ‘Super’ Matt pulled alongside the ‘Doctor’ on lap 30 and made several last lap challenges for the lead but the order remained the same throughout the second half of the race. Planck settled for third followed by current Advance Auto Parts SDS points leader Tim Fuller and Jimmy Phelps.

In the Paul Sawyer Memorial 40 lap feature for the Super Late Models Timmy McCreadie of Watertown, NY retook the lead from Rick Eckert of York, PA on lap 25 and held off the challenges of Jeremy Miller to take home the victory and the $5000 top prize.

“I almost through the race away there on lap 24 when Eckert got by me, and I thought I was headed to fourth, but I was able to get through traffic and use the high side to my advantage. The track was awesome as usual tonight, I’ve never been here when it isn’t,” commented McCreadie in victory lane.

McCreadie and Sean Cosgrove led the field to green with McCreadie rocketing to the lead. Cosgrove wasn’t as lucky as he lost second to Tim Fuller. Two quick cautions and both Cosgrove and fuller were pitside.

On the restart Eckert took second and went to work on McCreadie for the top spot. Eckert worked the low groove as McCreadie lived up on the cushion. The two leaders began running in heavy traffic and on lap 24 Eckert powered his #24 Mastersbilt to the inside of McCreadie to take the lead. On the very next lap in heavy traffic Eckert jumped the cushion with McCreadie, Jason Covert and Darryl Hills going three wide under him for the lead. McCreadie emerged the leader and began to pull away.

With the laps winding down McCreadie held off the challenges of Jeremy Miller to take home the victory by 2.149 seconds. Rounding out the top five were twelfth starting Jeremy Miller, Jason Covert, eleventh starting Ricky Elliott and Darryl Hills.
