NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Six feature events are planned for this Saturday, April 28, as Langley Speedway continues its 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with Hampton Chevrolet/Daily Press Night at the Races.
Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models (75 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Med Express Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service Super Trucks (25 laps); Kim Jusino, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps); and, the Pro 6 Series (20 laps).
Gates open at 1 p.m. The start of afternoon practice rounds has been moved up half an hour, to 2 p.m. The drivers meeting begins at 4:15 and qualifying gets under way at 4:30. As part of Saturday’s pre-race festivities, which start at 6:30, fans will be able to meet drivers on the frontstretch, take an up-close look at the cars, snap photos, get autographs, etc. The evening’s first feature contest goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5.
• • •
The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly “test and tune” session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6.
Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX, HRKC or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. With a race coming up on Saturday, Pro 6 Series teams may also take part in this week’s practice. There is no charge to watch the happenings from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions (as well as other events) are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

Yet another qualifying record fell last Saturday night when Brandon Hinson topped his own mark in time trials for the Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks. Hinson toured Langley’s .395-mile oval at 79.018 mph (17.996 seconds). It was the division’s first-ever sub-18-second qualifying effort.
Super Truck drivers, seeing their first action of the season this Saturday, will be taking aim at Brian Loving’s year-old division standard — 75.510 mph (18.832 seconds).
So far, in 2007, six track records (in Late Model, Grand Stock, Modified, Super Street, Wolf Truck and HRKC Champ Kart) have been broken or established.
• • •
Are you a big fan of close finishes? Then pay attention when the champ karts hit the track! Through two races — one for the HRKC karts and one for the MACKA karts — the combined margin of victory has been less than one-tenth of a second. Casey Wyatt won the HRKC opener by 0.028-second, while Kelly Johnson was the winner by 0.071-second in last Saturday’s MACKA event.
• • •
Speaking of Casey Wyatt, the six-time Late Model race winner from last season will take his first step toward the big time this Saturday as he attempts to qualify for the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series season opener, the Greased Lightning 150, at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, S.C.
The race will be taped by The SPEED Channel and will be shown on Wednesday, May 16, at 12 noon as part of the network’s “Racing Across America” program.
In addition to this weekend’s event, Wyatt plans to compete in Busch East races at Iowa Speedway (May 20), New Hampshire International Speedway (June 29 and Sept. 14) and Dover International Speedway (Sept. 21). The New Hampshire and Dover races are support events for NASCAR Nextel Cup Series races. Depending on sponsorship, other races may be added to Wyatt’s schedule.
According to his sister and PR director, Chrissy Ward, Wyatt still has his eye on an HRKC Pro Winged Champ Kart title. Since drivers can drop two races at the end of the season, missing this weekend’s kart event shouldn’t do too much damage to Wyatt’s chances. He also plans to make a few Langley Late Model starts.

Look for a commemorative Langley Speedway poster, featuring the track’s 2006 champions, in tomorrow’s (April 27) edition of the Newport News, Va., Daily Press. In addition to the colorful photos, you’ll also find money-saving Speedway coupons.
• • •
A new season of Langley Speedway’s popular “Wild Wacky Wednesday” programs kicks off on May 9. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun starts at 7. Adult and children’s (6-12) tickets are just $5 this year. Kids under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.
• • •
Langley Speedway’s drivers and teams will be off on Saturday, May 5, as the local racing community gathers at Richmond International Raceway for NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series events on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5.
NASCAR action resumes at Langley Speedway on Saturday, May 12, with USG Night at the Races. That evening’s lineup includes: Late Models, Grand Stocks, Super Streets, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs and A/C Mechanical Services/Steadfast Security & Investigations MACKA Champ Karts.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
