Kenly, NC --
It was a tale of two races Saturday night at Southern National Raceway Park. In the first of two 75 lap Kinston Automotive Late Model races, Four Oaks’ Jamey Caudill led from wire to wire to win. A lap 15 caution saw the second, through fifth place cars of Cliff Daniels, Scott Wise, Deac McCaskill and Drew Herring all get tangled up, leaving Caudill to dominate for most of the race. With ten laps to go, the black 03 of Stephen Rhodes came on strong, but to no avail, as Caudill took the checkered flag by .07 seconds. Curtis Truex Jr, John Whaley, Cam Strader and Kirk Leone rounded out the top six.
The second late model race saw Raleigh’s Deac McCaskill and what was left of his 08 Chevy charge through the field to victory. McCaskill started 22nd due to the previous race’s wreck, and slowly worked through the field over the course of 75 laps. Stephen Rhodes led the better part of the first 61 laps before falling victim to mechanical failure. A late move around Curtis Truex and Derek Lee put McCaskill into first place for the remainder of the event. Lee managed to hang on for second, with Truex Jr., Michael Rouse, Justin Milliken and Tony Cox finishing third through sixth.
After the second race, McCaskill summed up his night: “This was probably the best win of my career. I knew I had a good car, the crew worked hard to get us back on the track and in running order. I worked through the field and got it done”. McCaskill’s win, coupled with Drew Herring’s problems due to the same lap 15 wreck, gives McCaskill an 88 point lead going into next week’s events. Justin Milliken and Jamey Caudill are tied for second, with Derek Lee and Drew Herring rounding out the top five in points.
Lance West cruised to victory in the Limited Late Model 50 lap event. From the pole, West led all 50 laps to take the checkered. Tiffany Daniels (older sister of Late Model driver Cliff Daniels) took second in her Southern National debut as she held of a hard-charging PJ Flowers, who took third.
The Ford Focus Midgets had an evening that could best be summed up as interesting, to say the least. The 35 lap race was marred by a horrific wreck that saw the 7 of Bob White catch another driver’s tire, shoot up the fence and roll four times along the retaining fence before bounding down the turn three embankment and coming to a stop against the infield wall. Remarkably, White was alright after being checked out at a local hospital. Once the Ford Focus Midgets got going, the action was all on the track, as Bradley Riethmeyer made a pass on Tanner Swanson with five laps to go to win. Swanson finished second and Mark Burk came home third.
In Street Stocks, Stantonsburg’s Greg Barnette continued his winning ways, making a pass on Timothy Watkins on lap three and holding on for victory. Terry Lancaster held on for a solid third-place showing.
Wil Smith won his second 4 Cylinder race of the year, going wire to wire and holding off Lee Kozikowski and Kevin Pierce. In the Papa Jacks Thunder Cars event, Russell Din managed to hold off a hard-charging Bobby Whitley to win their 15 lap event. Whitley spun with 2 to go, allowing Paul Bryant to finish second, with Whitley having to settle for third.
Linwood Edmunson won the 20 lap UCAR event in which only three cars finished. Ronnie Devera and Scotty Jacobs were the other benefactors of the UCAR wrecks, coming home second and third respectively.
Next weekend brings Southern National its final race before the racing surface gets a repaving face-lift. April 28th’s action will feature a full schedule of racing featuring a dual-75 lap Late Model event. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $10 for youths 8-17, with all children admitted free. Military personnel admission is $13 with a valid military ID.
