Drive For Diversity Season Starts Strong
Apr 3, 2007 - updated Apr 3rd, 2007 3:05pm
Web posted by Michelle Langley

Charlotte, N.C. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:April 3, 2007

Drive for Diversity participant Peter Hernandez was back in action Saturday night at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., driving his No. 63 Spraker Racing Chevrolet to a fourth-place finish. NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series driver Michael Gallegos was also on track this weekend for the Drive for Diversity program.

Hernandez, racing in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, was able to work his way through the field after qualifying for the race in the 10th starting position. He narrowly missed his first top-three finish of the season, crossing the finish line door-to-door with the third-place car driven by Kris Bowen. Hernandez has scored a fourth place finish in each of his starts at Caraway Speedway this season.

“We have a great team and great equipment,” Hernandez said. “I’m really excited about this season with Spraker Racing and the Drive for Diversity program.”

Last season Hernandez won two races at Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, Calif. He finished the 2006 season as a participant in the Drive for Diversity program with nine top-five and 11 top-10 finishes.

The Drive for Diversity program is in its fourth season and is NASCAR’s leading on-track diversity initiative. The program is designed to give minority and female drivers and crew members an opportunity to compete with established NASCAR teams. In 2007, three drivers are competing in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and four drivers are competing in the NASCAR Grand National Division – two in the Busch East Series and two in the West Series.

Michael Gallegos opened the Grand National Division, West Series season for the Drive for Diversity program Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, Tex. Gallegos qualified 25th and finished the race 28th after getting caught up in an early-race wreck.

Gallegos, of Wheat Ridge, Colo., will make his next start for Performance Motorsports in the Grand National Division, West Series event at Phoenix International Raceway on April 19.

Hernandez, of Blue Island, Ill., will continue the 2007 season with Spraker Racing Enterprises in the Whelen All-American Series at Caraway Speedway.
