Faster Pastor Tom Cohick Holds Off Stevie Long For Victory At Virginia Motor Speedway
Mar 31, 2007 - updated Mar 31st, 2007 11:35pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

‘The Faster Pastor’ Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA started on the front row due to the inversion and made it count as he held off the advances of Walker Arthur and Stevie Long to take home the victory in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

Cohick and Jason Cahall brought the field to green and battled side by side back to the start finish line with Cohick barely leading lap one. As Cohick pulled away by two car lengths Scott Adams, Stevie Long and Walker Arthur were battling for third. On lap 3 dove to the inside of Cahall, Adams and Long to take second. On lap 4 the races first caution came out for a spin by Louis Timberlake in turn 2.

On the restart long swept the outside of Adams and Cahall to take third and close in on the two front-runners, Cohick and Arthur. On lap 6 Brian Staton powered his way to fifth with an outside move on Cahall with Donnie Marshall working the bottom. By lap 10 it looked as if Cohick might dominate with no challenges as he had worked to a ten-car length advantage. But Arthur had other thoughts as he reeled in Cohick on by lap 15 and began searching for a line to get by Cohick.

On lap 20 the top three of Cohick, Arthur and Long began to pull away from the rest of the field. On lap 24 Arthur worked inside Cohick but couldn’t make the pass. On lap 30 Long went to work on Arthur pressuring him for second. On lap 32, caution came out for the spinning Staton who had worked his way to 4th. On the restart Arthur looked outside Cohick and looked to have the pass made when Cohick slammed the door on him out of turn 2. On lap 33 Arthur working the high side jumped the cushion in turn two and lost three positions in the process.

Cohick led the final two laps holding off Long by .518 seconds for the victory.

“I love racing like that, I could see him get a nose under me several times, I am amazed at a good the car got as the laps were winding down, I just have to thank my crew,” commented Cohick in Victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Stevie Long, Scott Adams, Donnie Marshall Jr. and Walker Arthur. Tyler Bailey picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his eleventh place finish.

In other action Walker Arthur of Forest, VA traded the lead back and forth with Roger Jamerson of Glen Allen, VA before holding on an taking home the victory in the Truckin Thunder 30 lap feature. In the Charger 25 lap feature Bob Terry of Stafford, VA rocketed from his sixth place starting position to lead flag to flag for the victory. In the All American divisions 15 lap feature Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA battled with Dustin Owens and Marty Coltrain taking the lead good on lap 2 and then holding off Coltrain for his second win in a row.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Walker Arthur of Forest, VA set fast time in Hot lap qualifying and inverted the top four with the pill draw. Kenny Moreland and Davis Lipscombe led the field to green with Lipscombe leading lap one. Lipscombe held off Arthur for the next three laps before Arhtur finally got under Lipscombe coming out of turn 4.

Jamerson hen went to work on Lipscombe for second taking the spot on lap 5. Once past Lipscombe Jamerson set out for Arthur. On lap 13 Jamerson began his assault on the leader and took the lead with a strong inside move on lap 17 only to give it back to Arthur on lap 18.

Over the remaining twelve laps Jamerson tried desperately to get under Arthur but to no avail. Arthur held on to take the victory with Jamerson finishing second .857 seconds behind.

“I gotta thank the speedway for preparing such an awesome track, I was getting a little worried as I was having some clutch problems,” commented Arthur in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Davis Lipscombe, Tim Shelton who had to go to the rear of the field twice and Robert Kramer. Tommy Upshaw of West Point, VA picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his eighth place finish.

In the Charger 25 lap feature there was no denying Bob Terry of Stofford, VA as he rocketed from his sixth place starting spot to grab the lead on lap one. Terry then began to pull away from the field. Behind him the action was hot and heavy as Wesley Givens, Dave Moseley, John Kirby, James Givens, Kyle Nelson and Chris Tatum all swapped positions from second on back. Terry just dominated the event leading all 25 laps to pick up the victory.

“I have to dedicate this one to the late Keith Hubbard, I raced lap 23 with my right arm up on the roll bar in honor of him. What a race track this place is awesome,” commented Bob Terry in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Kyle Nelson, James Givens, John Kirby and Chris Tatum. Kyle Nelson picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.

In the night’s All American 15 lap finally, fans got treated to a tremendous race between Stephen Childress, Dustin Owens and Marty Coltrain. Owens and William Dunn led the field to green with Owens leading the opening lap. On lap 2 Childress went inside Owens out of turn four to take the lead. Owens worked to get back by but Childress was up to the challenge as Coltrain joined in on the battle for the lead.

With Childress leading the battle looked to be behind him as Coltrain had Kevin Fletcher, Dunn and Johnny Brooks Jr. working each other for position. Childress was able to hold off all comers for his second consecutive victory in as many races. Rounding out the top five were Marty Coltrain, William Dunn, Kevin Fletcher and Johnny Brooks Jr.
