Triplett opens season with Late Model triumph at Orange County Speedway

Rougemont NC --

NEWS RELEASE

Different year. Same driver. Same result.

In 2006, David Triplett Jr. was the dominant driver in the Late Model Stock Car Division at Orange County Speedway. The Timberlake driver won seven total races and, despite missing one race, wound up second in the division’s title chase.
Saturday, Triplett continued his winning ways by dominating a talent-laden Late Model Stock Car Division field in the 150-lap race, which highlighted the season-opening NAPA 330.
Triplett took the lead on lap 27 of the race and led the rest of the way to the checkered flag.
The victory came despite the fact that Triplett got only seven laps of practice earlier in the day. While the rest of the Late Model drivers were turning laps in practice sessions Saturday, Triplett was away on what he said was “personal business.”
When he arrived at the track, Triplett got in his short practice session and then turned in the fifth fastest time during qualifying.
Triplett then benefited from the luck of the draw and drew the second starting position for the 13-car field. The top six qualifiers drew for starting spots.
“I usually don’t like the draws,” Triplett said. “But today I really benefited from it.”
Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va., who was third fastest in qualifying, drew the pole position and fast qualifier Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J., who turned in a time trial lap of 14.120 seconds, started the event in fourth.
Denning moved into the runner-up position by the 90th circuit, but could never track down Triplett, despite the fact that a mandatory caution flag flew on lap 118.
“I knew we were running three 50 lap races with the cautions,” Triplett said. “Jon was pressing hard, so I tried to save all I could save for the end.”
Denning settled for a runner-up performance in the race and was followed by Ramsey in the third position.
“I enjoyed racing with Wayne,” Denning said. “He is a great competitor. He has great car control. But David is too fast. He’s a tough guy to beat no matter where you’re at.”
Stacy Puryear of South Boston, Va. finished fourth, while Terry Dease of Oxford rounded out the top five competitors.
Ronald Hill of Rougemont, the defending Late Model Stock Car Division champion at Orange County Speedway, finished sixth. Hill blew a motor during practice Saturday and had to use a replacement engine in the race. He was unable to make qualifying and started 13th in the field.
Walker Arthur of Forest, Va. finished seventh in his first-ever Late Model Stock Car run at Orange County, while Ryan Gray of Raleigh, who ran in the top five for much of the day, settled for an eighth place finish after encountering problems late in the race.
Leigh Carruthers of Wake Forest motored to a ninth place finish, while Justin Johnson of Roxboro, who also had problems in the event, rounded out the top 10 competitors.
The race was slowed twice for mandatory caution periods and once on the second lap when the cars of Matt Lofton of Timberlake and Andrew Perry of Hillsborough crashed in turn two.

Daryl Carver claims Limited Sportsman Division win
Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill grabbed the lead from Roxboro’s Brian Cole on the 20th circuit of the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race and held on the rest of the way to claim a victory.
Cole set the fast qualifying time for the day with a track record 14.426 seconds. He wound up starting on the outside of the front row after the top six qualifiers drew for position prior to the race.
Cole, who was driving a new car, jumped into the lead on the opening circuit and held the spot until Carver made the pass for the lead.
“We’re tickled to death to be this fast,” Cole said. “But we’ve got to tighten it up a little bit. We were a little loose all day.”
Cole wound up second in the nine-car field and was followed by Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. in the third position.
Mark Oakley of Rougemont wound up in fourth place, while Jerry Hinesley of Durham rounded out the top five drivers in the field.
The race was slowed by four caution periods.

Tommy Chandler posts victory in Grand Stock Division event
Tommy Chandler of Providence grabbed the lead early on from pole sitter James Turner of Gibsonville and wound up winning the 35-lap race for the Grand Stock Division.
Chandler recorded the fast qualifying time for the day with a lap of 15.883 seconds, however, Turner drew the pole position.
Turner, the division’s defending champion, wound up in second place in the six-car field.
Michael Hatley of Chapel Hill placed third in the race and was followed in the top five by veteran James Myers of Danville, Va. in fourth place and Cory Purnell of Yanceyville in the fifth position.

Defending champ Chuck Watkins wins Pure Stock opener
Chuck Watkins of Stem opened the season with a victory in the 20-lap race for the Pure Stock Division.
Watkins, who won seven races at Orange County Speedway in 2006 on his way to claiming the track crown, started third in the six-car field, but quickly motored to the front.
Watkins had the best qualifying lap of the day with a time of 16.878 seconds.
Matt Phipps of Durham finished second in the event and was followed in the top five by Keith Langston of Pittsboro in third place, Chuck Rice of Leasburg in the fourth position and Justin Tucker of Elon in fifth place.

Canady roars to Mod-Four triumph
Cole Canady of Whiteville dominated action in the 25-lap race for the Modified Four-Cylinder Division.
By the end of the event, Canady had lapped the five-car field on the way to securing the victory.
Harold Summey finished second and was followed by Billy Tillman of Rougemont in third place.

Rodney Cook scores win in Rolling Thunder Modified race
Rodney Cook of Reidsville posted a win in the 50-lap race for the touring Rolling Thunder Modified Series.
Cook grabbed the lead on the opening circuit and held it until the 17th lap when John Thorpe moved out front.
Cook battled back into the lead position on lap 36 and held on the rest of the way to post the win.
Thorpe placed second in the 13-car field, while Doug Paasch wound up in third.
Thomas Stinson motored to a fourth-place run in the event and was followed in the top five by Irvin Bell.
