’06 NASCAR national champion Philip Morris closing in on all-time victory record at SoBo

South Boston, VA. --

Philip Morris’ racing dream became a reality in 2006.

The veteran Late Model Stock Car Division driver from Ruckersville, Va. secured the NASCAR Weekly Series national championship after postting 13 wins during the season.

Three of those victories in 2006 came at South Boston Speedway, giving America’s Hometown Track its second link to a NASCAR national champion in as many years. In 2005, Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. claimed the South Boston Speedway Late Model Stock Car Division championship on his way to winning the NASCAR Weekly Series national championship.

Morris’ three wins at South Boston in 2006 were crucial in his chase for the national crown.

“We could not have won the national championship without those three wins,” Morris said. “Those wins were very big for us.”

Morris will be back at South Boston Speedway this season. He plans on running in quite a few events on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

“With the way the schedule is set up this year, we plan on being there quite a lot,” Morris said. “I’m looking forward to it. That track has always been a special place to me.”

Morris won the Late Model Stock Car Division championship at South Boston Speedway in 2003 and he sits in a third-place tie on the list of all-time winners at the facility.

Morris and Wayne Patterson each have 27 career victories at South Boston, while former national champion Barry Beggarly and seven-time South Boston Speedway champion David Blankenship are tied for the most wins with 34.

“Hey, that’s pretty neat, I didn’t realize that until you told me,” Morris said. “A record like that is something that would be a nice thing to target.

“Do me a favor, though, don’t tell Barry or David about it,” Morris added with a laugh. “Those guys would probably come out of the woodwork to try and whip my tail.

“In all seriousness, though, if we can have a good season up there this year, we could possibly close in on that [record],” Morris continued. “That would be something very special. You think about all the greats that have come through that track. To be the all-time leader in wins at South Boston would be something to be very proud of.”

South Boston Speedway’s 50th anniversary season will get underway on Saturday, March 24. Twenty-one events are on the schedule for the upcoming season at South Boston Speedway.

Race fans can purchase season tickets, good for all events in 2007, for $175. A season ticket pass for youth, ages 10-15, is available for the 2007 season at a cost of $99.
