A sparkling new NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship trophy was unveiled to the series’ track operators during events surrounding 2007 Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway Saturday morning. The hand-crafted trophy was commissioned by NASCAR to the creator of some of the most prestigious championship hardware in professional sports – Jostens. I

“With a new era dawning for NASCAR short track racing and our new series sponsor Whelen, it is a perfect time to build upon and recognize the prestige of winning the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR’s Managing Director of Racing Operations. “This new trophy honors the heritage of our past series champions which is a perfect compliment for our future national title winners.”

The perpetual trophy displays the names of all 25 previous national champions on nickel silver sub-base plates. The 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion will receive a separate first-of-its-kind individual champions’ version of the award.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is NASCAR’s national championship program for short-track racing. Connecticut-based Whelen Engineering, a leading manufacturer of automotive, aviation, industrial and emergency vehicle lighting is the series sponsor. More than 10,000 drivers compete at NASCAR sanctioned short tracks throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“We are excited and proud to be the new title sponsor of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series,” said Phil Kurze, Whelen’s Director of Motorsports. “We are looking forward to building on its strong heritage of hometown NASCAR racing.”

The trophy weighs-in at a substantial 84 pounds and soars to more than 3 feet tall. Last year, the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Jostens became the exclusive designer/manufacturer of all NASCAR championship diamond rings.

Jostens has created 27 of 41 Super Bowl championship rings, including the ring for Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers Super Bowl I victory and the Super Bowl XL ring for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jostens also produces prestigious awards such as the Heisman Trophy.

About NASCAR

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Inc. (NASCAR), which began in 1948, is the sanctioning body for one of America's premier sports. NASCAR is the #1 spectator sport – holding 17 of the top 20 attended sporting events in the U.S., the #2 rated regular-season sport on television with broadcasts in over 150 countries, and has 75 million fans. These fans are the most brand loyal in all of sports, and as a result more Fortune 500 companies participate in NASCAR than any other sport.

NASCAR consists of three major national series (the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, NASCAR Busch Series, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series), four regional series, and one local grassroots series, as well as two international series. NASCAR sanctions 1,300 races at 100 tracks in more than 30 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico. Based in Daytona Beach (FL), NASCAR has offices in New York, Los Angeles, Charlotte (NC), Concord (NC), Conover (NC), Bentonville (AR), Mexico City, and Toronto.
