Langley Speedway wrapped up the 2005 season, its most successful campaign in years, with a festive awards gala on Saturday evening. The semi-formal event, which attracted an estimated crowd of 625, was held at the new Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton.
Points leaders in each of the track’s divisions were recognized with special attention reserved for the ‘05 champions — Tommy Cherry, Chick-fil-A Late Models; Dean Shiflett, Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks; Steve Dill, nTelos Super Streets; Hugo Belfiore, Hillco Building Maintenance Mini Trucks; Nick Smith, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends; Craig Firman, E-Z Auto Rental U-Cars; and, Eric Shaffer, Full Throttle Wolf Trucks.
Langley’s points fund for the ‘05 season, combined with cash and prizes from NASCAR, totaled nearly $52,000. Cherry, the Late Model champ, claimed over $17,500 in cash and prizes for his title-winning effort. For the year, the Speedway paid out a grand total of more than $300,000 in racing purses and points fund awards.

Special achievement award winners for the 2005 season, announced at Saturday’s fete, included:
• Rookie of the Year — Nick Smith, Late Models; Dean Shiflett, Grand Stocks; Trip Anderson, Super Streets; Bill Mullis, Mini Trucks; Ron Barfield, INEX Legends; and, Robbie Davis, U-Cars.
• Outstanding Sportmanship — Jeff Shiflett, Late Models; Harold Stanley, Grand Stocks; Jill Brinson, Super Streets; Irene Bechtel, Mini Trucks; Sparky West, INEX Legends; and, Donald Reynolds III, U-Cars.
• Craftsman Mechanic of the Year — Shawn Balluzzo.

Track announcer Mark Potter served as the master of ceremonies for the event. Trophies were provided by C&J Engraving, while floral arrangements were supplied by Jeff’s Flowers of Hampton. The lavish affair was catered by Embassy Suites and Astro DJ provided the post-awards musical entertainment.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
