Sellers can clinch NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national title Saturday night at SoBo
Sep 15, 2005 - updated Sep 15th, 2005 6:26pm

South Boston, VA. --

Sellers can clinch NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national title Saturday night at SoBo South Boston, VA. The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national championship is so close, Peyton Sellers can almost reach out and grasp it.
The Danville, Va. driver could clinch the crown Saturday night when South Boston Speedway hosts the Champions Night race program. The first of five events slated Saturday night will get the green flag at 7 p.m.
Sellers has already locked up the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division championship at South Boston and he can now breathe a sigh of relief in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division I championship race. Sellers leads the Division I standings with 1,112 points, based on his best 16 finishes of the season. With just one weekend of racing remaining, Sellers’ point total cannot be matched by any other drivers in the division. He stands to collect a $25,000 prize as the Division I champion.
In addition to his imminent Division I championship, Sellers could also win the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national title. The national championship, which includes an additional $50,000 bonus, is awarded to the Divisional leader with the highest point total overall, based on their best 16 finishes of the season.
Sellers leads all drivers nationally, with Division II points leader Chris Spieker, of Massena, Iowa, ranked second at 1,088 points. Minnesota’s Donny Reuvers leads Division IV and is ranked third among the four divisional leaders, with 1,072 points; Wisconsin’s Kevin Nuttleman leads Division II and is fourth with 1,068 points.
Based on the mathematics of NASCAR’s new points format for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Sellers’ Division I championship is all but assured and he can clinch the national title under the following scenarios…
Sellers can clinch the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national title if cross-country rival Ed Kosiski, who competes at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., does not win at least three races this weekend, while also finishing at least three positions ahead of Joe Kosiski (his older brother) in their next race at I-80. (If Ed meets these criteria, he could win the Division II championship and gain up to 1,112 points overall to challenge Sellers for the national title.)
Sellers can put the national title out of reach – for Kosiski or anyone else – by finishing at least third in his next race, if there are 21 or more cars in that event. If there are fewer than 21 cars in Sellers’ next race, or he does not finish in the top three, Sellers will not improve upon his 1,112 point total and could be challenged by Kosiski under the scenarios outlined above.
Sellers, however, will have his hands full Saturday night. Sellers has reeled off five consecutive victories on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval and he owns 12 overall triumphs for the season at South Boston Speedway.
The five straight wins by Sellers has upped the current bounty on the Late Model title leader to $1,500. Therefore, any driver, other than Sellers, who posts a win Saturday night would collect a winner's share of $4,500. Sellers could earn the bounty money if he opted to start from the rear of the field and battle through to secure a win.
In addition to the normal strong field of drivers who compete weekly at South Boston Speedway, Frank Deiny, Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va. and Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. have said they will be on hand to try and claim the bounty money Saturday night.
Justin Snow of Danville, Va. heads into the Limited Sportsman race Saturday night with a 14-point lead over Jonathan Bailey in the chase for that division's championship.
In the Virginia Army National Guard Pure Stock Division, Joey Throckmorton owns a 14-point lead over second-place Nick Igdalsky in the battle for a track championship, while Lee Anderson sits in third place, just two points behind Igdalsky.
Other events slated Saturday night include races for the touring INEX Legends Series and the touring Legendary Flathead Series.
Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get the green flag at 5 p.m. as well.
Adult admission for the race will be $8 up to 6:30 p.m. and $10 after that. Youth, ages 10-15, will be admitted for $5 and children under the age of 10 will be admitted free with a paid adult.
