Ben Knows Super Late Models - Does Ben Know Modifieds Too?
Nov 20, 2006 - updated Nov 20th, 2006 7:29pm
Web posted by

Concord, NC. --

(November 17, 2006) – A few years back, Bo Jackson managed to do something unthinkable in major league sports. He was a member of the Kansas City Royals baseball team while also playing in the National Football League for the Raiders. Not only did Jackson compete in both sports, he excelled. That led to a Nike advertising campaign that simply stated, “Bo Knows Baseball” and “Bo Knows Football.”

Now, short track standout and three-time PASS North champion Ben Rowe is getting set for the Mason-Dixon Meltdown on Thanksgiving Weekend at South Boston Speedway. The Maine driver is naturally going to compete in the 250-lap Super Late Model event there. That’s no surprise, since Rowe swept the final three PASS North races of the year closer to home. What is out of the ordinary, though, is that Rowe will also make his Tour-type Modified debut in that division’s 250-lap feature the same day. He’ll drive the #4 entries fielded by Richard Moody Racing in both races, a possible total of 500 laps in single day.

So to steal a page from Nike’s book, does this mean that “Ben Knows Super Late Models” and “Ben Knows Modifieds”?

“I don’t know about the Modified part yet, but we should go down there as one of the top-five teams with the Super Late Model,” said Rowe. “A big end-of-season race like this is a new experience anyways. It attracts a lot of people, and you end up racing against a lot of new guys who you haven’t raced with before. So I’ll be learning in the Super Late Model because of that too. But the Modified is completely new to me.”

Don’t bet against Rowe hitting a home run in his first at bat either.

“We always go to the race track to win. With this being my first Modified race, we want to be realistic. I’d be happy to time trial in the top five or ten, stay out of trouble and finish there, too. But if things start clicking, who knows? We’ll go for it.”

Racing a Modified is something that Rowe has wanted to do for a long time.

“My father [short track legend and fellow Meltdown SLM competitor Mike Rowe] used to race a Modified years ago at Beech Ridge (in Maine),” said Rowe. “He used to run two cars down there actually. I’ve thrown the idea around of doing something like this for three or four years. They look like a lot of fun and are just like a big go-kart. We came across this one that was a good car for a good deal, so Richard [Moody} decided to get it and have some fun.”

Rowe didn’t just end up with any Modified either. He will drive a car previously raced to victory lane by former NASCAR Weekly Racing Series champion Peter Daniels. Now the trick is getting used to the new toy.

“Peter Daniels has won a lot of races with this car,” said Rowe. “When I looked at it, I knew that it was a good car, but I really didn’t know what I was looking at either. So we got it back to the shop and took it completely apart. We powder coated it and painted it. We put it back together and learned all about it. It only took us a few nights to reassemble it.”

Rowe will also have some help in figuring the car out at the track. Two-time True Value Modified Racing Series winner for 2006, Tony Ricci will make the trip with the #4 team to help them at South Boston.

“Tony Ricci helped us in the shop and he’s good enough to go down with us to South Boston and help us out. He knows a lot about these cars and will be a big help to us.”

So with a good car, some good advice and some great driving skills, don’t count out Ben knowing Modifieds. After all, he might be a rookie – but he’s still Ben Rowe.

The Tour-Type Modified portion of the “Mason-Dixon Meltdown” features a 250-lap main event on Saturday, November 25th. The PASS South Super Late Models also have a 250-lap event that day and both premier divisions will be racing for a $12,500 paycheck for the winner, plus lap money and other bonuses to be announced soon. Also competing during the “Mason-Dixon Meltdown” weekend are the Legends Cars (Friday only) and the Pro Challenge Series (Saturday only).
