Phillip Morris' Championship Acceptance Speech
Nov 18, 2006 - updated Nov 18th, 2006 9:02pm
Web posted by Ken Childs

Las Vegas, NV --

Below is a transcript of the speech given by Phillip Morris at the Dodge Weekly Series banquet:

"I am very honored to be here tonight celebrating in one of the most famous cities in the world. It’s a lot different here than in my hometown near the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Things are slow in Ruckersville. There’s no traffic and no hurry. I have lived there all of my 41 years and most everyone knows one another or is kinfolk.

The fast pace of racing, its technologies and inventions are diverse from everyday life at home, but never the less I grew up around stock cars. My earliest memories were of the sounds and smells of racing at dirt tracks in Virginia.

In grade school, I drew pictures of stock cars and in high school my mind wondered and pondered about the suspension and mechanics of cars. But in college I applied everything I learned in math and physics to the forces, energies, and geometry of race cars. It wasn’t until my last year of college that I got my chance behind the wheel, and I was hooked the first time I was on the track. I always had always had a special place in my heart for stock cars, but now it was the focal point of everything I did.

I tell you this brief history so that you might know that our hearts are knit together in our passion and sincerity for this sport and if this wasn’t enough, the brother like comradery with crew members and competitors makes this more than a sport, but a way of life.

Another huge blessing is my family’s support, which not only sustains me but encourages me. When I don’t win a race, my 9 year old son, Blake asks me why I didn’t push the gas pedal all the way down. My 12 year old daughter Allison has been taking victory lane photos with me since she was 4 months old. Our newborn is three months old and has already celebrated in victory lane 3 times. I guess it goes without saying that Donna is an amazing wife and my best friend. She sacrifices so much for me. Thank you honey for loving me and helping to make my dreams come true.

I also want to thank God for giving me such a hardworking and dedicated pit crew. My guys are closer to me than brothers. Our car was crashed in our final race at Motormile Speedway and it appeared we would finish as a runner-up in the National Chase once again. The decision was put to the crew whether they would call it good and finish out the year with a regional title or work around the clock to compete at Caraway the next weekend – a track that we had never seen or raced at. Keep in mind that it was totally up to them. I did not make the decision, it was their sacrifice. The decision was unanimous and in their own words we would go down swinging.

Billy, Chad, Darrell, Jeff, Neil, Robert, and Scott – this championship belongs to you and the best thing about being here is watching the excitement in your eyes as you realized what you accomplished. Thanks to the wives for having compassion for your husbands and allowing them to chase their dreams and goals.

I would also like to thank David Hagan, Al Shelor, Randy Merriman and the staff at Motormile Speedway for changing the way that short tracks do business. Without your vision and your investment, we would not have had the car count and I would not be the champion tonight. Thanks to South Boston Speedway, and Russell Hackett at Caraway Speedway for being hospitable and friendly to us even though we did not compete there weekly.

I would also like to thank Peyton and HC Sellers, last years’ national champion and would like to extend my gratitude to Theresa Nagy at Certified Auto Body who painted our car all year and my sponsors Spencer and Brown Crane and Rigging and Trailer Town USA. I especially want to thank my prayer partners Tim Duggins and Tom Crouthamel for teaching me how to pray and pour out my heart to God and trust him.

Most of all, I want to thank you Lord. You rescued me from a miry pit, you heard my cries and my prayers and you answered them with your mighty power. You set me high atop this pedestal. How fitting is it that I should praise your Holy name tonight and forevermore."
