Tire Ends Huffman’s Day at Texas
After making his way up through the field, Shane Huffman’s race was ended when a tire blew out on his No. 88 Navy Accelerate Your Life Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS during Saturday’s NASCAR Busch Series O’Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway.
On Friday night Huffman qualified the Navy Chevrolet in 30th spot for Saturday’s race with a fast lap of 28.754 seconds, 187.800 mph.
At the drop of the green flag Huffman wasted no time in moving toward the front. When the caution flag was displayed for the first time on Lap 4 he had already made his way up to 26th. When the caution flag waved again on Lap 29, he was up to 21st. The team elected to pit under that caution period and changed four tires, added fuel and made track bar and air pressure adjustments to help Huffman with the loose handling condition he was experiencing entering the turns.
Huffman broke into the top 20 on Lap 44 and was running in 19th position when a tire blew out on the No. 88 in the middle of Turns 3 and 4, sending him hard into the wall on Lap 64.
He was transported to the infield care center for evaluation and was released.
“The No. 88 Navy Chevy was awesome today. Wes (Ward, Crew Chief) and the guys on this team gave me a great car this weekend. We were pretty fast off the hauler and we were on our way to a good finish. I was just following Wes’s instructions to take it easy and work my way up through the field when a tire blew out in between Turns 3 and 4. It destroyed our car.
“I hate it the most for the guys on the team. They work their butts off at the shop each week getting our cars ready and then the road crew does a great job of making the necessary changes at the track. We had a good run in Memphis and it looked like today was going to be a good day for us as well, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.”
The early wreck left Huffman with a 42nd-place finish.
Despite the finish, the No. 88 team remains 19th in the owners points standings
