Frank Deniy Jr. Wins SoBo 300 Collects $15,000
Oct 30, 2006 - updated Oct 30th, 2006 10:12pm
Web posted by Tracy Dean

South Boston, VA. --

Due to inclement weather on Friday South Boston Speedway officials were forced to compact the event into a one day show. After getting the track dried out Saturday morning the cars had a brief two hour practice before qualifying and heat races.
As the event took the green flag Jamey Caudill lead the pack after winning the pole. Caudill was last years SoBo 300 winner and was looking for the repeat. The race saw its first caution wave when Dude Gibbs spun in turn four. Back to green there was a battle up front between Frank Deniy Jr. and Caudill after battling door to door for a couple of laps, Deniy took the lead on lap 71.

The race saw its second caution on lap 83 after contact was made with Rodney Cook and Dude Gibbs. The Gibbs automobile spins but continues. The third caution flew on lap 146 when Chad Harris lost a door panel. The race got back under green for a couple of laps before the mandatory halfway caution on lap 150. At the halfway point there was a twenty minute intermission for drivers to pit and make necessary changes to their cars. The top five at the half was Frank Deniy Jr., followed by Caudill, Nick Smith , Barry Beggarly and Kelly Kingery. The veteran Beggarly who has collected many victories at South Boston throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. Deniy is also a former track champion at SoBo.
As the second 150 laps begin, Caudill did not make it back on the track to restart after suffering mechanical problems. Frank Deniy wasted no time pulling away establishing he was the car to beat. Caution once again flew on lap 189 after Rusty Skewes spun.
The sixth caution of the event was big for some of the front running cars. David Triplett Jr. had looked underneath of Kelly Kingery for fourth position. When Kingery tried to block the advances of Triplett the pair spun on lap 232, eliminating Triplett from the event.
After getting back to green Nick Smith was staying right in the tire tracks of leader Frank Deniy Jr. and looked to possibly have a good enough car to challenge the leader. However, caution flew again on lap 263 when Joe Gaita cut a tire and backed into the wall collecting Jonathan Bailey. Gaita was in 13th spot after getting in on a heat race. After going back to green, Barry Beggarly had to retire his car from the event due to mechanical problems on lap 275.

The race would see its last caution on lap 296 when Ronald Hill and Cliff Daniels got together, Jason Dickerson and Brad Kurth where involved. This caution setup a green, white, checkered finish with Deniy still showing the way.
Frank Deniy Jr. was able to maintain his lead over Nick Smith to win the SoBo 300 followed by, Drew Herring finishing third, rounding out the top five was Phillip Morris and Rodney Cook. CE Faulk came home sixth followed by sixteen year old Marc Davis, who finished seventh after getting in on a heat race.
Deniy, who is from Mechanicsville, VA collected a cool $15,000 for his efforts. When asked after the race what he would do with the money he said, “I’ll probably buy another race car.”
