Update: Points Finale falls victim to foul weather Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

(Oct. 7) — With a coastal storm delivering buckets of rain, gusty winds, frigid temperatures and flooded streets across the area, Langley Speedway has canceled this evening’s racing program — the scheduled finale of its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series points season. The event will not be made up.

Pending final verification, Langley Speedway’s track champions for 2006 are:
• Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models — Greg Edwards
• Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks — Dean Shiflett
• NTELOS Wireless Super Streets — Tommy Sweeney
• Verizon Super Trucks — Justin Ballo
• Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends — Cameron Patrick
• E-Z Auto Rental UCARs — Randy Prillaman
• B&C Seafood Modifieds — Shawn Balluzzo
• BBFlabradors.com Wolf Trucks — Jill Brinson

Last weekend’s races brought an end to the chase for the 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national championship. For the third time in four years, a Virginia driver has claimed the crown.
This season’s big winner is Philip Morris of Ruckersville — familiar to local fans for his many successful Late Model Stock Car outings at the old Southampton Motor Speedway.
In 2006, Morris competed weekly at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va. NASCAR divides its member tracks into four divisions. Like Langley Speedway, Motor Mile was one of 16 tracks in Division I.
Heading into the final weekend of competition, Morris had already clinched the Division I title. To have a shot at the national honor, though, he needed to post one more win to overtake Division II champ Joe Kosiski of Omaha, Neb.
With Motor Mile closed on Sept. 30, Morris was forced to hit the road in search of a race at a Division I track. He wound up at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C. — a track at which he’d never competed before last week.
Morris picked up the feature win and edged Kosiski by two points for the national title, 1,114-1,112. The miniscule margin represents just one position on the track over the course of a long season.

Greg Edwards was Langley Speedway’s representative on the final Division I leaderboard. With 970 points, he was eighth in the rundown, just behind Junior Miller (1,012) of Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., and just ahead of Rodney Cook (954) of Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, N.C.
While Edwards’ record compared very favorably with several of the drivers who finished ahead of him, his placing in the final standings was hampered by an inconsistent Late Model car count at Langley in ‘06.
In addition to collecting points for their finishing positions in each race, drivers also rack up bonus points based on the number of cars in the starting field — 10 bonus points for 15-20 cars and 20 bonus points for 21+ cars.
In 20 events in ‘06, Langley Late Model drivers accumulated 240 of a possible 400 bonus points — only 60 percent. Contrast that figure with 2005, when, in 21 events, the division captured 390 of a possible 420 bonus points — almost 93 percent.
If Edwards had garnered the maximum number of bonus points in 2006, he would have ended the season with 1,082 points, which would have been good enough for third place. Each track leader’s best 16 finishes are counted when determining their ranking on the division leaderboard.

A full day of UCAR racing excitement is planned for next Saturday, Oct. 14, as Langley Speedway hosts the Inaugural RaceCom of Virginia UCAR Nationals. The event will conclude with a 50-lap/$1,000-to-win feature race.
A test-and-tune session will be held at the track on Friday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For complete details on next weekend's event, visit the Speedway’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com, or call (757) 865-RACE.

The track will hold its annual awards banquet on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Hellenic Community Center in Newport News, Va. Tickets are $35 each. Contact Lisa Kincaid in the Speedway sales office to purchase tickets and to make seating arrangements.

Langley Speedway will host the “Night of Destruction” on Saturday, Nov. 4, featuring a wide assortment of novelty events — three demolition derbies (one for domestic cars, one for imports and a powder puff for females only), an Enduro race ($1,000 to win), a chain race, a bag race and an appliance race, plus tug-of-war and burnout contests and an appearance by the notorious “Black Bandit.”
For complete details, including rules and registration info, call the Speedway office or visit the track’s Web site.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
To learn more about Langley Speedway and its schedule of upcoming events, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or visit the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
