Update: '06 Track Titles to be decided on "Championship Saturday" Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

(Oct. 4) — A huge, eight-race, 310-lap program is planned for this Saturday, Oct. 7, as Langley Speedway puts the wraps on its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series points season.
Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); Verizon Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); BBFlabradors.com Wolf Trucks (20 laps); and, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. The drivers meeting is slated for 4, followed by time trials at 4:15. Pre-race activities start at 6:50 and the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID and for senior citizens, 60+) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.
• • •
Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 5. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and practice runs until dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
• • •
Heading into this Saturday’s points finale, Greg Edwards holds a two-point edge over brother Danny Edwards in the Late Model standings, 916-914. Mark Wertz is third in the current rankings with 890, followed by Jeff Shiflett with 848 and Casey Wyatt with 844.
Before the final standings are tabulated, each Late Model driver’s two-worst finishes (or missed races) will be tossed out.
In the “adjusted” standings, Greg Edwards leads Wertz by 10 points, 848-838. Danny Edwards is third with 834, while Wyatt (806) and Shiflett (778) complete the top five.
Greg Edwards can clinch the ‘06 Late Model championship by finishing fifth or better in Saturday’s finale.
• • •
In the Grand Stock division, Dean Shiflett enjoys a 10-point advantage over Ricky Derrick, 548-538. Like Greg Edwards, Shiflett can wrap up the title with a top-five run on Saturday evening.
Behind Shiflett and Derrick, there are tight battles for the third (Danny Harrell with 446 and Jason Leftwich with 444) and fifth positions (Brandon Hinson with 418 and Gene Smith with 414).
• • •
Tommy Sweeney can seal the Super Street crown with a fourth-place finish in this weekend’s race. He holds an 8-point lead over Ritchie German in the current standings, 478-470. Sweeney has come home in the top three in all 10 races this season.
In the battle for fifth place, Ricky Derrick has a two-point lead over Jessica Wood, 364-362. Deeper in the points rundown, J.T. Brown is up by two over Jason Langley, 314-312, for eighth place.
• • •
Going into last Saturday’s race, Justin Ballo was a longshot in the tussle for the Super Truck championship, trailing Carl Livingston by 30 points. That all changed when Livingston failed to clear the post-race technical inspection, vaulting Ballo to the top of the division standings.
In the current rundown, Ballo leads ‘05 champ Hugo Belfiore by 14 points, 540-526, and can nail down the title with a seventh-place finish on Saturday evening. Just behind Belfiore are Livingston and Tommy Nixon, both with 524 points.
• • •
Randy Prillaman came away from last weekend’s UCAR feature with an insurmountable 60-point lead over Kevin Alves in the standings, 662-602, assuring himself of the ‘06 division crown.
In this Saturday’s race, Alves will try to hang onto second place. He leads Robbie Davis by six points, 602-596. Meanwhile, Robert Rusinyak and Glenn Healy Jr. will face off for fifth place. They both enter this week’s event with 494 points. Dusty Conner and Donald Reynolds III are also deadlocked, at 398, in the battle for ninth place.
• • •
Longtime Late Model regular Shawn Balluzzo can secure the Modified title with a sixth-place run in Saturday’s race. He holds a 10-point advantage over Buddy Emory in the current standings and enjoys the tiebreaker edge with two race wins to none for Emory.
• • •
In the Wolf Truck standings, Jill Brinson is up by 48 points over Michael Farmer and Brad Perron. She has accumulated 392 points, while Farmer and Perron both have 344. Brinson can clinch the championship in the division’s inaugural season by simply starting Saturday’s finale.
• • •
Saturday’s INEX Legends 25-lapper will be a non-points affair. The division closed out its ‘06 points season on Sept. 23 with Cameron Patrick edging Don McLaughlin for the title, 418-416.
Several Langley Legends standouts are expected to compete in this weekend’s 15th Annual Legends Asphalt Nationals, being held at Lanier National Speedway in Gainesville, Ga.
• • •
A full day of UCAR excitement is slated for Saturday, Oct. 14, when Langley Speedway hosts the Inaugural RaceCom of Virginia UCAR Nationals.
Gates will open at 10 a.m. and inspections will take place from 10 to 12 noon. Cars will hit the track for a couple practice rounds early in the afternoon. Time trials, to determine positions 1-20, will begin at 4:15 p.m. Starting at 5:30, drivers who didn’t make it into the feature lineup via time trials will face off in a pair of 20-lap heat races to fill positions 21-30. The 50-lap feature event, paying $1,000 to the winner, will get under way at 7. Grandstand admission is $10.
For Langley newcomers (and Langley regulars who want a little extra practice time), an all-day test-and-tune session will be held on Friday, Oct. 13. The session will run from 9 a.m. ‘til 5 p.m. Pit admission for licensed competitors is $10. There is no charge to watch Friday’s practice runs from the grandstand.
Complete rules and registration information for the event may be obtained by calling the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or visiting the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com.
For out-of-town UCAR teams, the track has arranged a special $35/night room rate at Super 8, only minutes away from the Speedway. For more information, call Robert Ellis at (757) 262-1011 or contact him via e-mail at <vafatboy@aol.com>.
• • •
Langley Speedway will hold its annual awards banquet on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Hellenic Community Center in Newport News, Va. Tickets are $35 each. Contact Lisa Kincaid in the Speedway sales office to purchase tickets and to make seating arrangements.
• • •
A total of $5,000 in purse money has been posted for Langley Speedway’s “Night of Destruction” on Saturday, Nov. 4. Gates open at 10 a.m. and competition gets under way at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID and for senior citizens, 60+) and $5 for children, 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Among other things, the event will feature a “Triple Demolition Derby” (one for domestic cars, one for imports and one powder puff for females only), an Enduro race ($1,000 to win), an appliance race, a chain race, a bag race and tug-of-war and burnout contests.
For rules and registration info, call the Speedway at (757) 865-RACE or surf over to the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com.
