Feast and Famine for Casey Wyatt this Weekend
Oct 4, 2006 - updated Oct 4th, 2006 6:24pm
Web posted by Chrissy Wyatt-Ward

Hampton Virginia --

Race Date: September 30, 2006 Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models 100

Langley Speedway, Casey came to Langley this weekend with the intentions to be a busy man. He was set to pull double duty by racing in the HRKC Sr. Pro Wing Champ Kart Series and in his Creech Motorsports Fabrication Monte Carlo. Before qualifying his Late Model, he qualified on the pole for the HRKC Sr. Pro Wing Champ Kart race with a time of 23.344 over second place qualifier Jeffrey Johnson who turned off a of 23.568. This is Casey’s second Champ Kart race in a row and his second pole as well. Following his effort in the Champ Kart, Casey qualified third for this week's Late Model race with a time of 16.380. To date the car was the best it has been yet. Casey and Team 29 were excited about the race and were ready to get to racing.

At 7:00 pm, the order was given and the Champ Kart race was under way. By lap two, Casey had dropped all the way back to 10th position to pick up his team mates David Phelps and Ashley Mullis. Within two laps, Casey would move from 10th to 4th and the Front Row Racing team was well on their way to the top three spots. When lap five lit up the scoreboard, Ashley Mullis was in the lead, followed by Casey and David Phelps. The race looked as if it would run flag to flag with no cautions until lap 12 when Casey's brother Dannie, who started 4th needed assistance to get off of the track after his motor let go. When the race resumed, Front Row Racing pulled a comfortable lead over the field and crossed the line 2.717 seconds ahead of the 4th place finisher. During the post race interview, Casey thanked the Front Row Racing crew for all of their work getting the kart ready and making it so dominant. He also thanked Bill Mullis for giving him the opportunity to drive in this thrilling series.

Casey’s next venture for the evening was the Late Model event. After a few last minute adjustments and getting Casey strapped into the car, he lined up in the third spot to start the race. The pace vehicle took to the track and the Crossroads Fuel Late Models pulled onto the speedway to take their warm up laps. As Casey entered turns one and two for the second time, he came to a slow crawl and stalled on the backstretch. He radioed the crew and exclaimed, “The car just cut off and it won’t restart.” Car owner Wayne Wyatt asked if the car would turn over at all and Casey responded “No! It won’t do anything. It’s acting like the starter is dead or something; there was a loud clanking sound just as it cut off.” A speedway tow vehicle pulled around to try and push-start Casey’s Monte Carlo, but to no avail. Casey would radio to the crew to tell them that something was locked up.

After Team 29 and other fellow crewmembers pushed the car to the attention of the engine builder Bob Shreeves, he went straight to looking for the problem. It didn’t take long for them to realize that the failure was terminal. Bob explained that the obvious problem was a bent valve, which would certainly render the car unable to compete.

At the evening’s end, car owner Wayne Wyatt stated, “There is a silver lining in this. Whatever led to our problem could have had a much worst result. We are fortunate that the failure occurred during pace laps at lower RPM’s, rather that during the race. The consequences of an engine failing then would’ve been much worst.” Obviously disappointed by the evening’s events, Casey stated that he’s eager to get the motor repaired and get back to racing in Langley’s final event of the 2006 season this weekend, October 7.

Casey and Team 29 would like to thank their sponsors: Wyatt Homes Inc., Rica-Sha Hair and Tanning, George Brooks Law Offices, Bostic Electric, CBX Custom Modulars and their many fans for their continued support.
