Jamie “The Jet” Flies To RD 4 Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge Win At Virginia Motor Speedway
Sep 25, 2006 - updated Sep 25th, 2006 8:15pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

Jamie “The Jet” Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD started sixth, methodically working his way into a position to battle for the lead over the first 30 laps of the 40 lap feature. On lap 28 Lathroum took second from Ronald Cusic and directly went to work on then leader Donnie Marshall of Gloucester, VA. For six laps the two jockeyed for the top spot with Marshall able to hold off the strong runs by Lathroum. Lathroum worked the high side expertly, powering around Marshall’s outside to take the lead with two laps to go in round 4 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T. Lathroum then pulled away to take home the Challenge Series and Fall Classic win at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

“We’ve been working with this new chassis all year long, we are finally getting a hold of it here at the end of the year. I have to thank the track staff for providing such a great racetrack, hti sthing was fast tonight,” commented Lathroum in victory lane.

The weekend started off with Lathroum setting a new track record of 19.144 seconds in hot lap qualifying. Troy Williams, Donny Marshall and Joey Love all took heat race wins giving them the first three starting spots for the “A” Main. On the drop of the green flag Marshall took control of the lead from the outside with Ronald Cusic, Williams and Love in tow.

Love worked his way into third, as Lathroum took fifth. Lap 23 Lathroum took third from Williams with a pass out of turn 4. On lap 28, Lathroum powered around the outside of Cusic to take second, then set out to catch Marshall. By lap 31 Lathroum had reeled in Marshall that’s when Lathroum began searching for a way around Marshall. The two battle over the next six laps side by side with Marshall being able to hold off Lathroum each time. That was until lap 37 when Lathroum launched his car to the outside of Marshall in turns one and two, gaining the advantage down the backstretch and taking over the lead.

Once out front Lathroum ran the rim, pulling away and taking home the victory. With the victory Lathroum denied Jared Powell and Tom Cohick a chance at a $5000 bonus. This is only the second time in the five-year history of the four race series that there have been four different winners.

Rounding out the top five were Donnie Marshall, Ronald Cusic, tenth starting Pat Wood and Troy Williams. Williams picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.

In the Budweiser Modified 30 lap feature Bret Hamilton of Powhatan VA and Brian Dobie of Partlow, VA led the 25 car field to green with Dobie taking the lead from the outside. Dobie, Hamilton and Mark Schools battled each other for the top three spots for the first half of the race with Dobie holding off all challenges.

From lap 19 till lap 26 Dobie and Hamilton put on a clinic on how to run side by side. On lap 27 Dobie slide up the track with mechanical problems ending his night. Hamilton led the field back to the final green flag, leading the last two laps and repeating as the Modified Fall Classic Champion.

Rounding out the top five were Page Harrison, Gary Conner, twentieth starting Brian Maxey and Brent Bordeaux. Gary Conner picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 35 lap feature Walker Arthur of Forest, VA continued his domination of the division with his tenth win of the season. Arthur took the lead on the drop of the green flag never looking back leading flag to flag for the victory. Rounding out the top five were Okey Synan Jr., Daren Bolac, Tim Shelton and Derrick Quade. Quade picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.

In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 30 lap feature Bob Terry of Stafford, VA and Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA had the fans on their feet as they battled side by side for the lead for the last five laps of the feature with Terry hold on for the victory. Rounding out the top five were James Givens, Chris Tatum, Wesley Givens and Kyle Nelson. Wesley Givens picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fourth place finish.

In the Dixie Chopper All American 20 lap feature Wes Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA took the lead on the final lap of the “A” Main in a fantastic duel with John Mosby of Doswell, VA to take home his first victory in three years. Rounding out the top five were Thomas Rose, Marty Coltrain, Luke Danison and Byard Harris.

In the Recycler Junk Car feature Dave Moseley of Manassas, VA and Tom Rawlings of Ft. Washington, MD battled for the lead all the way to the checkers with Moseley taking home the victory. Rounding out the top five were Tom Rawlings, Dennis Maxey, Ricky Douglas and Richard Marks.
