Chase Pistone: Complete package for Premiere Motorsports

Chase Pistone looks like the complete package with Premiere Motorsports and its sponsor Awesome Awnings, which is downright amazing for a man who only a couple of years ago was just another competitor running the Legends cars at Lowes Motor Speedway. In fact, he had been on the sidelines since the second Lakeland race this season.

At the time, Pistone was fifth in the season points standing when he got the call to come up to the Busch series, a venture that didn't pan out. At the time he had already placed 4 out of 6 top ten finishes. He even started second in his last Lakeland race.

To the rescue was Steve Husketh and Jason Leonard who picked Pistone to drive its team fleet of Fords for the Championship. Husketh had been battling a bout with cancer and had to stop operations a few races and had no driver for the Championship.

"I am thru with most of my chemo and I am ready to go back to racing" says a jubilant Husketh. "We felt Chase was the way to go in selecting a good driver that was qualified for the championship. It may take a few races for us to feel each other out, but we will be okay."

Winning the championship? Its beyond that now, because of where Pistone started in the points. What the team is looking for is to finish out the Championship and see what Pistone can do during the Championship runs.

"We may make some changes and we may not. We might be able to announce something by the time we hit Myrtle Beach" says Husketh.

"This was a very spur of the moment", says Pistone in his new ride. And when you get on a new team, it takes a few laps to gell in. And being at a new track, Iowa, it put even more pressure on the young 23 year old driver.

“I was there with a new team, so just being there with a new racecar, I was there just getting used to everything. The first day in practice, I was just trying to get acclimated to everybody and get used to the car. The second day I made it up there on the speed charts which wasn't too bad. Then in qualifying we qualified 13th, which was actually pretty good considering there were 42 cars there.

Serious tire issues (as were the problems with most other teams) caused the team to retire after 125 laps, after having gone thru four sets of tires. So the Premiere Motorsports/Awesome Awnings team chalks up this race as a practice session to get used to each other.

“It was a new experience. My crew chief David ‘Buggy’ Pletcher was there and it’s always great to have him around the racetrack giving me pointers. We had a few kinks to work out, but once we do that I think we'll be running up front every time in a couple of races. It was just unfortunate to go all the way out to Iowa and only run 125 laps and not have anything wrong with the racecar or anything.”

Pistone still has a lot to learn with his new team but still has five races to do it. However Pistone has been with a couple of other teams in the ProCup ranks and came out of the box strong earlier this year. That was one of the strong reasons Husketh and Leonard picked Pistone to run their cars.

"We had several drivers come and talk to us for the Championship, and some of them were top notch drivers that would turn your ears" said Huksketh. "He did good with what he was dealt with at Iowa and now we just go on to Jennerstown."

For Pistone the future is now, because he is mired down in the points, but has the talent to build himself and show the talent that he had at the beginning of this season.

Find somebody else in the garage who finished in the top ten, four out of six races, that was on the free market. Leonard seems to feel that he has found a jewel.

"Chase was the person we are looking for that can complete our team and be a good showing for Awesome Awnings. He has the talent, so lets see what he can do for the rest of the year."
