5-race slate set for Sept. 23

Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway -

Update: Five feature events slated for Sept. 23 Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006

With the 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series season in its closing weeks, the intensity level should be at a fever pitch this Saturday, Sept. 23, as Langley Speedway hosts a five-race, 240-lap program.
This week’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps); and, B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 4, followed by time trials at 4:15. Pre-race festivities, highlighted by a demonstration of speedy R/C vehicles from Hobbytown USA, start at 6:30. The evening’s first feature race goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID and for senior citizens, 60+) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 21. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and practice runs until dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

Cory Millard was disqualified after failing to clear the technical inspection following her victory in last Saturday’s HRKC Pro Winged Champ Kart race. With Millard’s DQ, Casey Wyatt moved up to first place in the official rundown.
The amended finishing order is as follows: 1. Casey Wyatt; 2. David Phelps; 3. Alan Purser; 4. Linwood Harris; 5. Phillip Clarke; 6. Gabe Salisbury; 7. Jimmy Grady; 8. Greg Shaffer; 9. Rick Thomas; 10. Dwain Smith; 11. Danny Wyatt; 12. Steven Shaffer; 13. Greg Burgess Jr.; 14. Jeffrey Johnson; 15. Ashley Mullis; DQ Cory Millard.

With his win in last week’s Late Model feature, Greg Edwards added two points to his edge over brother Danny Edwards in the division standings. He now leads by four, 824-820. Mark Wertz, an early retiree from last Saturday’s event, is third with 796, followed by Casey Wyatt with 776.
Before the final standings are tabulated, each Late Model driver’s two-worst finishes (or missed races) will be tossed out.
In the “adjusted” standings, Greg Edwards has overtaken Wertz and leads by 12, 756-744. Danny Edwards ranks third with 740, while Wyatt is fourth with 738.
Greg Edwards would clinch the ‘06 Late Model crown by finishing first or second in the last three races — something he’s done in 10 of 18 events this season. Should he drop into a tiebreaker situation with Wertz, Greg Edwards would find himself at a disadvantage as Wertz currently holds a 6-4 lead in race wins — the first step in the tiebreaker procedure.
• • •
Gunning for his second straight Grand Stock championship, Dean Shiflett holds an 8-point lead over Ricky Derrick in the current standings, 450-442. Shiflett can wrap up the title by finishing first or second in the division’s final three races. He has placed in the top two in 6 of 10 events this year. Shiflett and Derrick have been the only Grand Stock race winners this season with each driver scoring five victories.
• • •
Ritchie German’s win in last Saturday’s Super Street feature allowed him to close to within 10 points of division leader Tommy Sweeney, 432-422. Sweeney finished third and remained on schedule to claim the championship. Third-place finishes in the final two Super Street events would be enough to bring him the title. Sweeney has finished in the top three in all nine Super Street races this season.
• • •
Cameron Patrick can wrap up INEX Legends crown by finishing 12th or better in Saturday’s points finale for the division. In the standings, he leads second-place Don McLaughlin by 22, 388-366.
The INEX Legends will close out their ‘06 Langley season with a non-points affair on Saturday, Oct. 7. Several of Langley’s customary front-runners are expected to be out of town that weekend, competing in the 15th Annual Legends Asphalt Nationals at Lanier National Speedway in Gainesville, Ga.
• • •
With two races left on the Modified schedule, Shawn Balluzzo holds an 8-point lead over Mark Claar and Buddy Emory. Balluzzo has posted 142 points, while Claar and Emory have both accumulated 134. Balluzzo can claim the Mod championship with a pair of runner-up outings.
• • •
In preparation for the RaceCom of Virginia UCAR Nationals, slated for Saturday, Oct. 14, Langley Speedway has announced a “test and tune” day for Friday, Oct. 13. The session will run from 9 a.m. ‘til 5 p.m. and pit admission is $10 per person.
For out-of-town UCAR teams, the track has arranged a special $35/night room rate at Super 8, only minutes away. For more information, call Robert Ellis at (757) 262-1011 or contact him via e-mail at <vafatboy@aol.com>.

Langley Speedway finishes up its “Extreme Sports Wednesday” season on Sept. 27 with a big night of competition. Following the regular lineup — “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition” — all the winners from this year will square off to determine the 2006 championship.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15. Grandstand tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.
• • •
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 30, when the track plays host to Girl Scout Night. That evening’s lineup includes: Late Models (in the season’s final 100-lapper), Grand Stocks, Verizon Super Trucks, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs, BBFlabradors.com Wolf Trucks and HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.
• • •
Langley Speedway will hold its annual awards banquet on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Hellenic Community Center in Newport News, Va. Tickets are $35 each. Contact Lisa Kincaid in the Speedway sales office to purchase tickets and to make seating arrangements.
• • •
A total of $5,000 in purse money has been posted for Langley Speedway’s “Night of Destruction” on Saturday, Nov. 4. Gates open at 10 a.m. and competition gets under way at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID and for senior citizens, 60+) and $5 for children, 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Among other things, the event will feature a “Triple Demolition Derby” (one for domestic cars, one for imports and one powder puff for females only), an Enduro race ($1,000 to win), an appliance race, a chain race, a bag race and tug-of-war and burnout contests.
