Rodney Sawyers will make a return visit to South Boston Speedway Saturday night

South Boston, VA. --

Rodney Sawyers will make a return visit to South Boston Speedway Saturday night to compete against the competitors in the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division.

The 150-lap race will be the featured attraction of the Miss Utility 150 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race program. The first race of the evening is set to get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Sawyers nearly claimed a Late Model Stock Car championship at South Boston Speedway in 2000 when he lost the crown to Nick Woodward by a mere two points. He did claim the track's Super Fund title that year for leading the most laps and collecting the most victories, however.

Sawyers tested recently at South Boston Speedway and is looking forward to competing Saturday night.

"I was a little nervous before I went out there and practiced some," Sawyers said. "But, once I got in the car, everything just sort of came back to me."

Sawyers said he had not competed at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval since 2001 when he ran in "about four races that season."

South Boston Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice said she was looking forward to having Sawyers in the field for Saturday night's Late Model Stock Car race.

"Rodney ran some good lap times when he tested," Rice said. "He proved that he had not lost the touch of driving a race car, once he tested and found lap times being fast and consistent. We look forward to having Rodney here."

In addition to having Sawyers in the field Saturday night, South Boston Speedway will also crown its division champions.

The top four drivers in the chase for the Late Model Stock Car Division championship are separated by only 22 points heading into the final event.

Eight-time winner Drew Herring leads the way by a mere eight points over second-place Owen Miller. Eddie Johnson is third in the standings, just 10 points behind Miller and only 18 points out of the lead. Jonathan Cash sits fourth in the standings with four points behind Johnson and 22 points behind Miller.

Also slated for action Saturday night at America's Hometown Track will be the Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division, Budweiser Pure Stock Division, Touring INEX Legends Series, and the Legendary Flatheads.

Bruce Anderson has locked up the Limited Sportsman Division championship, while second-place Tommy Peregoy, who is 58 points out of first place, is 22 points ahead of third-place Danny Willis, Jr.

In the Pure Stock Division, Chuck Watkins has locked up the division championship, however, second-place Quain Moore is only two points ahead of third-place Lee Anderson in the battle for the runner-up position in the standings.

Jeremy Cook leads the standings for the INEX Legends Series, while Cameron Patrick is second, 26 points out of the top spot.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:15 p.m.

Adult admission for the race will be $8 up to 6:30 p.m. and $10 after that. Youth, ages 10-15, will be admitted for $5 and children under the age of 10 will be admitted free with a paid adult.
