NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006

After two weeks off, one planned and the other not, NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action resumes at Langley Speedway this Saturday, Sept. 16, when the track plays host to Fire/EMS Night.
Saturday’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); Verizon Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice begins at 1:30 p.m. The drivers meeting gets under way at 4, followed by time trials at 4:15. Pre-race activities commence at 6:55 and the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID and for senior citizens, 60+) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 14. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and practice runs until dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions are available on the track’s Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week’s session.

With just one month left in Langley’s 2006 points season, let’s take a look at the classes that’ll be in action this week and what each division leader will need to do to hang onto the #1 spot:
-- Late Models: Entering the final four races, a four-way battle for the Late Model title has developed, involving Greg and Danny Edwards, Mark Wertz and Casey Wyatt. Greg Edwards is the current points leader with 774. Danny Edwards ranks second with 772, while Wertz holds down third with 770. Wyatt has posted 730 points.
Remember, though, that each Late Model driver’s two-worst finishes will be dropped from consideration before the final standings are tabulated.
In the current “adjusted” rundown, Wertz is first at 716, followed by Greg Edwards at 706. Danny Edwards and Wyatt both have 692. Wyatt enjoys an edge in that pairing with a 6-2 advantage in race wins.
Second-place outings in the last four events would give the championship to Wertz. That may sound like a tall order, but he has finished first or second in 10 of 17 races this year.
-- Super Streets: In the Super Street standings, Tommy Sweeney holds a 14-point lead over Ritchie German, 386-372. Third-place runs in the last three races will secure the crown for Sweeney. He has racked up eight top-three finishes in eight ‘06 starts.
-- Super Trucks: With three races to go, Carl Livingston is 34 points ahead of Justin Ballo in the chase for the Super Truck championship, 486-452. Sixth-place finishes the rest of the way would be enough to give Livingston the title. In 10 races this season, his worst finish has been third (twice).
-- UCARs: Randy Prillaman holds a commanding, 52-point lead over Kevin Alves and Robbie Davis with three races left in the UCAR title hunt. Prillaman has 566 points to 514 for Alves and Davis. To bag the ‘06 UCAR crown, Prillaman only needs ninth-place performances in the remaining events. He has come home in the top three in 11 of 12 races this season, a 13th-place hiccup on June 3 accounting for the only blemish on his stellar record.

Congratulations to Denny Hamlin! Despite late-race engine problems, Langley Speedway’s 1997 Mini Stock champ managed a 15th-place finish in last Saturday’s Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway and secured a spot in the Chase for the Nextel Cup — the first rookie driver to achieve that feat.
With his on-track success, Hamlin’s off-track profile is on the upswing, too. He spent last Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Langley Speedway, shooting the latest in the popular series of humorous commercials for his sponsor, FedEx. The spot should begin airing very soon.
And, on Wednesday, Sept. 13, he and the other nine Chase contenders presented “The Top 10 Things Never Said Before By A NASCAR Driver” on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Denny’s contribution, #5 on the list: “You’re looking at a guy who can drive 500 miles without taking a leak!”
• • •
Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program fell victim to the elements on Sept. 13, but will resume on Sept. 20. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15. Grandstand tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.
• • •
The final “Extreme Sports Wednesday” show of ‘06 is slated for Sept. 27. Following the regular program on that evening, all the winners from this season will battle to determine the 2006 championship.
• • •
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 23, with a five-race slate. That night’s lineup includes: Late Models, Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Super Streets, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (in their final points race) and B&C Seafood Modifieds.
• • •
A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
