Update: Late Model points battle heads for homestretch

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway - Hampton, VA

Thursday, August 31, 2006

Six feature events are planned for this Saturday, Sept. 2, as Langley Speedway celebrates Labor Day weekend with the 18th program on its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series schedule.
This week’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); and, HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. The drivers meeting starts at 4, followed by time trials at 4:15. Pre-race activities begin at 6:50 and the green flag drops on the first feature race at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID and for senior citizens, 60+) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Due to inclement weather, Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session, slated for Thursday, Aug. 31, has been scrubbed. Also, there will be no open practice session on Thursday, Sept. 7. Weekly practice rounds will resume on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Of course, for drivers looking to get in a little practice time, the track is available for rent. Call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE for more information and to make arrangements.

With his season on the line, Late Model driver Casey Wyatt got good news on Monday afternoon when NASCAR heard his appeal of a two-race suspension, which was handed down after some ill-considered comments and actions following the Aug. 12 race.
Wyatt’s penalty has been reduced to probation through Dec. 31, 2006, leaving him eligible to compete and solidly in the Late Model title hunt.
Had his appeal been denied, Wyatt’s championship hopes would have been dashed. While each Late Model driver’s two-worst finishes (or missed races) will be dropped from points consideration at the end of the season, races missed due to a suspension or from which a driver was disqualified cannot be dropped.

The Late Model title chase, which has developed into a tight, four-way joust, enters the homestretch with this week’s 75-lapper.
On the strength of a second-place finish in last weekend’s race, Greg Edwards has edged ahead of his brother, Danny Edwards, for first place, 774-772. Mark Wertz, last Saturday’s race winner, is third in the points rundown with 770, while Wyatt is fourth with 730.
As previously stated, though, each driver’s two-worst finishes will be tossed out before the final standings are calculated.
If the season were to end right now, Wertz would hold the top spot in the “adjusted” standings with 716 points — 10 ahead of Greg Edwards with 706. Wyatt and Danny Edwards both have 692. Wyatt enjoys the upper hand in that pairing, as he holds a 6-2 edge in race wins (the first tiebreaker).
Also, it’s important to note that, while the final Late Model points race at Langley is slated for Oct. 7, the NASCAR points season wraps up on Oct. 1. Drivers on the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division I leaderboard as of that date will receive a bonus payout from the sanctioning body and its national series sponsors.
Greg Edwards currently represents Langley Speedway on the Division I leaderboard, ranking eighth among drivers from 16 tracks across the country — just behind Ace Speedway’s Rodney Cook and just ahead of South Boston Speedway’s Drew Herring.
As close as the Langley points battle is, it’s entirely possible that one driver could bag the NASCAR loot, while another driver could be crowned the ‘06 track champ and a third driver could claim bragging rights as the “unadjusted” points leader.
• • •
Dean Shiflett and Ricky Derrick will continue their tussle for the Grand Stock championship in Saturday’s 40-lap contest. Shiflett scored his fifth win in last Saturday’s race to equal Derrick’s victory total. Through 10 events, they are the only two drivers to visit Victory Lane. Shiflett holds an 8-point lead over Derrick in the standings, 450-442. Jason Leftwich is third, 82 points behind Derrick.
• • •
Ritchie German, who moved up to second place in the Super Street standings after his win on Aug. 19, will try to close ground on division leader Tommy Sweeney in this weekend’s 50-lap feature. Sweeney holds a 14-point lead over German, 386-372. Heading into the Aug. 19 event, Dale Parro held the second spot, but retired after only 12 laps, finished 15th and dropped to third in the standings, 32 behind Sweeney.
• • •
Cameron Patrick will be shooting for his fifth victory in Saturday’s INEX Legends race. He leads Don McLaughlin by 22 points in the standings, 388-366, and, so far, is the division’s only multiple-race winner.
• • •
Longtime Langley Late Model regular Shawn Balluzzo enjoys an 8-point advantage over Mark Claar and Buddy Emory in the Modified standings. Through three races, Balluzzo has collected 142 points, while Claar and Emory have both racked up 134. The three races have produced three different winners — Balluzzo, Claar and Jason Palmore. The last event, on Aug. 12, attracted a season-high, 17-car field with several Rolling Thunder Modified tour drivers joining the proceedings.
• • •
Rained out on Aug. 30, Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program resumes on Sept. 6. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15. Grandstand tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.
• • •
In deference to NASCAR Nextel Cup activities at Richmond International Raceway, Langley Speedway will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 9. The track won’t be silent all weekend, though.
On Sept. 8, Casey Cycle City will present a special Friday edition of “Extreme Sports Wednesday” with $450 payouts (plus trophies) to the winners of the “Time Attacks” and “1-on-1 Drags” (A and B Mains) and $250 (and a trophy) to the winner of the “Burnout Competition.” All previous Wednesday night winners are eligible to compete.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the action starts at 7:30. Pit admission is $20 ($17 with a pit pass from Sept. 6). Grandstand tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.

RaceCom of Virginia has been announced as the title sponsor of the Virginia State UCAR All-Star Challenge, to be held at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Oct. 14.
