Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models 75 presented by Coca-Cola
Casey Wyatt qualified 6th this week for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Models 75 presented by Coca-Cola race. The car had been a bit off the pace all day and Wyatt said tire stagger would be the key to a successful race.
He spent much of the evening prior to the race among family and friends, who have provided much support to him in the last two weeks. After relaxing and taking in some racing, he got back to grind and moved to the infield to get ready to “Go Racing.”
As the field of 22 cars and 11,000 horses came roaring through turn 4, Wyatt bid his time and waited for the right opportunity to get down on the bottom. That opportunity came in the way of a caution. Restarting single file allowed him to concentrate on the race ahead of him, instead of the one under him. By lap 8, he had moved up from 6th to 4th. As is the custom of Casey, he “rode” until the latter part of the race. Once he set his sights on Danny Edwards, it was clear that it was Danny’s race to run. Edwards had a great line and Wyatt was up for the challenge. He completed the pass of Edwards on lap 61 and motored on to catch the dominant leader, Mark Wertz.
A caution flag waved with three laps to go. Wyatt has clearly been very strong on restarts and the team was hopeful that the impressive advantage that Wertz had all evening would be something he could compete with, now that the advantage had been squandered by a caution. The green flag waved and the race was on…. Edwards mounted a quick challenge to Wertz and the two were side by side coming out of 4 as Wyatt waited for the opportunity to make his move. As they completed their next circuit, Wertz came out of turn 4 very high and Edwards was racing the line normally considered the “high” line. With Wertz and Edwards in their positions, Wyatt pulled under Edwards as they approached the start / finish line. As he pulled his nose to the LR wheel of Edwards, Wyatt held his line and Edwards pulled to the bottom, making contact with Wyatt’s nose going into turn 1. Edwards got loose as he entered the turn Wyatt lifted as Edwards straightened his Dodge out and raced on to the last caution. On the final restart, at risk of loosing a good finish, Wyatt laid back and finished on the podium for the 4th week in a row.
