Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

Five feature races are planned for this Saturday, Aug. 26, when Langley Speedway plays host to Coca-Cola Night at the Races, the 17th event on the track’s 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series schedule.
This week’s lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks (40 laps); Verizon Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps); and, BBFlabradors.com Wolf Trucks (20 laps).
Gates open at 12 noon and practice starts at 1:30 p.m. The drivers meeting begins at 4, followed by time trials at 4:15. Pre-race activities get under way at 6:50, while the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Staffers from DOWN HOME magazine will be on hand this Saturday for “The Great DOWN HOME Giveaway.” Fans are encouraged to stop by the DOWN HOME table, which will be located near the main entrance, and register for prizes, including concert tickets, gift certificates and other goodies. Also, two lucky winners will get to take part in a three-lap, “Richard Petty Driving Experience” ride-along adventure at Richmond International Raceway.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and practice runs until dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

As expected, Casey Wyatt filed an appeal of his two-race suspension that was handed down by NASCAR last Wednesday afternoon, allowing him to compete until a final ruling is reached. Reportedly, his appeal will be heard on Monday, Aug. 28.

With a third-place finish in last week’s Late Model feature, Danny Edwards has moved atop the division standings. He holds a slim edge over his brother, Greg Edwards, 728-726. Mark Wertz, who finished 13th in the Aug. 19 event, slipped from first to third in the points rundown with 720. Wyatt and Jeff Shiflett remain fourth and fifth with 684 and 676 points, respectively.
At the end of the season, each Late Model driver’s two-worst finishes (or missed races) will be thrown out before the final points are tabulated.
In the current, “adjusted” standings, Wertz remains in first place with 666 points. Greg Edwards is second with 658, while Danny Edwards is third with 648. Wyatt ranks fourth and, with 646 points, has closed to within two of Danny Edwards in the adjusted standings. Shiflett is fifth with 606.
• • •
Dean Shiflett and Ricky Derrick continue to enjoy a stranglehold on the Grand Stock Victory Lane. In nine races this year, Shiflett has scored four wins, while Derrick has claimed the other five. Shiflett holds a six-point lead over Derrick in the standings, 400-394. Derrick is 76 points ahead of third-place Brandon Hinson, who is clinging to a two-point lead over Jason Leftwich. Gene Smith and Danny Harrell are only four and six points, respectively, behind Hinson.
• • •
Hugo Belfiore, the ‘05 Super Truck champion, led laps 5-17 of last Saturday’s feature. It marked Belfiore’s first stint in the top spot since he led the first two laps of the April 29 race. He is still looking for his first win of the season. Carl Livingston holds a 22-point lead over last week’s race winner, Justin Ballo, in the current division standings, 436-414.
• • •
The UCAR class will wrap up a run of three straight weeks of competition on Saturday night with Kevin Alves trying to maintain his current hot streak. Alves has won three of the last six races and ranks third in the standings, four points behind Robbie Davis and 48 behind leader Randy Prillaman.
• • •
Jill Brinson will try to make it 7-for-7 in Saturday’s Wolf Truck race. She enjoys a 30-point lead over Brad Perron in the standings, 300-270.
• • •
Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program continues on Aug. 30. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15 and general admission grandstand tickets are $8. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.
• • •
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 2. The lineup for that evening’s Labor Day Weekend program includes: Late Models, Grand Stocks, NTELOS Wireless Super Streets, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends, B&C Seafood Modifieds and HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.
• • •
As is the custom, Langley Speedway will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 9, when the attention of the local racing community turns to NASCAR Nextel Cup activities at Richmond International Raceway.
• • •
A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
