Ted Musgrave, #9 Team ASE/Germain Toyota Tundra

Concord, NC --

(August 18, 2006)
Defending NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Ted Musgrave says the “gentle touch” at Bristol can be the difference between the finish and the fence. The veteran racer loves the challenge of racing at Bristol and knows full well that this track is one of the “make it or break it” tracks for the championship points contenders. He heads into Wednesday night’s O’Reilly 200 sitting fourth in points following a fourth place finish at Nashville Superspeedway.

“All it takes is just a little bump or a little touch and your truck’s out of control and you wreck,” Musgrave explains. “It’s one of the pivotal points in the points race. Between Bristol and Talladega, those are the two that can really shakeup the battle throughout the top ten. So, I’m gonna go to Bristol with the mindset that I want to finish the race. From there, I’ll look at going for a finish in the top five or top ten.”

Musgrave started on the pole for his first race in the Truck Series at Bristol, and nearly won the race if not for a flat tire. He understands all too well all the challenges of the track, and he’s attacking the trip to Tennessee with a champion’s attitude.

“It’s a race track where you race the race track but then you’ve gotta watch that no one gets on the inside of you and touches you because that’s all it takes is just a little bump or a little touch and your truck’s out of control and you wreck. You kind of stay on the offense but if someone’s pressuring you really bad, you let them go. Otherwise, sooner or later, you may get that little tap that sends you into the wall,” said Musgrave. “When you’re out there by yourself, it’s OK. You’ve gotta be aware of everything that’s going on – it’s very fast. You stay focused on where you’re at then, when you throw the other trucks in there, it’s a very intense race.”

Last week’s fourth-place finish helped Musgrave jump to 4th in the championship point standings. It was his 70th Craftsman Truck Series top-five finish. Ahead of him by 45 is David Reutimann in 3rd, by 95 is Johnny Benson in second and completing the Toyota top-four in points is teammate and point leader Todd Bodine, 239 points ahead of Musgrave.

Mugsgrave’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Driver Points Standing: 4th Germain Racing’s Owner Points Standing: 5th Quotes on Bristol Motor Speedway: • Spotter or Strategy? “Definitely the spotter. He’s very, very valuable. As fast as things go it’s hard for a driver to look in the mirror, look where he’s going, watch the gauges, watch the mirror, watch the line, what’s ahead of ya…The spotter is pretty much gonna be my rear view mirror – I can see everything that’s going on ahead of me, he’ll have to watch what’s going on behind. I think when we get there we’ll have to sit down and have a long talk between the two of us and discuss how we’re gonna survive that race.” • Setting up for Bristol…“Every time we go, we run pretty decent, other than one year we tried kind of a weird setup that didn’t work very well. Bristol is never-changing – the track surface doesn’t change. We ran pretty good there three years ago, and I think we’ll put that setup in the truck. The trucks are pretty much the same, the only difference is the tires!” • Challenge is Traffic or Track… “It’s both. When you’re out there by yourself, it’s OK. You’ve gotta be aware of everything that’s going on – it’s very fast. You stay focused on where you’re at then, when you throw the other trucks in there, it’s a very intense race. It’s a race track where you race the race track but then you’ve gotta watch that no one gets on the inside of you and touches you because that’s all it takes is just a little bump or a little touch and your truck’s out of control and you wreck. You kind of stay on the offense but if someone’s pressuring you really bad, you let them go. Otherwise, sooner or later, you may get that little tap that sends you into the wall.” • Musgrave has 25 NASCAR career starts at Bristol Motor Speedway, including two Busch Series starts with one top-five and one top-ten finish and 20 Cup Series starts with two top-ten finishes.
