Jeremy Miller Takes USA 100™ In Epic Battle With BO Feathers At Virginia Motor Speedway
Aug 21, 2006 - updated Aug 21st, 2006 1:58pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, VA --

Jeremy Miller of Littlestown, PA battled with Bo Feathers of Winchester, VA side by side for four laps before wrestling the lead away on lap 28 of the 50 lap, $10,000 to win event. Miller then motored on to pick up the MACS sanctioned 27th Annual USA 100 presented by Thurston Spring Service at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA.

On the drop of the green flag the race got three wide in a hurry as Bo Feathers, Ricky Elliot and Pete Ivey all wanted to lead the first lap. Feathers would lead the first lap but by only a bumper over Elliott. On lap 2 Jeremy Miller worked his way inside Elliott to take second and then set out to reel in Feathers.

Caution would fall on lap 5 for a spin by G.R. Smith. On the double file restart Feathers regained control but with Miller still challenging for the lead on the bottom. Caution on lap 21 closed the field once again with Feathers once again choosing the high side for the double file restart. Feathers once again held on to the lead with Miller battling on the bottom.

On the restart Booper Bare, Mike Balzano, Jimmy Bernheisel and Bob Salathe battled for fifth with Bernheisel coming out the winner and then taking fourth from Ivey. With battles everywhere on the track Feathers and Miller continued to battle for the lead. With Feathers working the high side and Miller down on the bottom for the next four laps the two raced side by side until Miller finally took the lead on lap 28 at the line by inches.

Feathers battled back to the outside but couldn’t wrestle the lead back from Miller. Several cautions closed the field back on Miller and gave Feathers a chance to battle for the lead. The last restart on lap 36 was Feathers last chance and Miller was able to hold him off as they raced out of turn 2. Once in the lead Miller began to pull away form the field as Feathers now had company in the form of Elliott for second.

Miller would go on to work his way through traffic and take a ten car length advantage win over Feathers.

“I got to take my hats off to Bo Feathers, when you go race him he seems to get better every week, he is capable of winning this race, he raced me clean I raced him clean, what can I say this is just awesome,” commented Miller in victory lane. “The track was beautiful, I could run in the middle, top and bottom, you could run anywhere you wanted to, if things had been a little different I may not have won this thing, its about the best racing I’ve been in all year. To put my name in the USA 100 record books is a great deal,” added Miller.

Rounding out the top five were Bo Feathers, Ricky Elliott, Jimmy Bernheisel and Pete Ivey. In the two 25 lap, $1000 to win qualifiers Ricky Elliott and Bo Feathers picked up the wins.

In other action in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA took the lead form Eric Erwin on lap 5 and held off a hard charging Bret Hamilton, who started fourteenth to take home his second win in a very competitive race. Rounding out the top five were Bret Hamilton, Eric Erwin, Brent Bordeaux and Brian Dobie. Gary Conners picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature the “Faster Pastor” Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA looked like he was going to be the one to beat leading the first lap and pulling away from the field as Jared Powell, Neil McClanan and Ronald Cusic battled for second. Powell took second but had a lot of ground to close to catch Cohick. It closed up quick when on lap 6 caution came out when several cars got together in turn 4.

On the restart Powell jumped to the inside of Cohick, taking the lead out of turn 2. After that the only thing to slow Pawell were cautions. And on each ensuing restart Powell pulled away. When it was all said and done Powell came across the stripe a full straight ahead of Cohick and the rest of the field for his third win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Tom Cohick, Ronald Cusic, Sommey Lacey and Donnie Marshall. Neil McClanan picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his eleventh place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Donnie Owens led lap one but with Okey Synan, Jr. to his outside in a side by side duel. Synan would take the lead by a bumper the next time around and finally pulling ahead on lap five. On lap 10 Owens went back inside Synan as the two raced side by side once again until on lap 12 Owens retook the lead. Once in the lead Owens looked in control and held off a hard charging Walker Arthur for his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Walker Arhtur, Roger Jamerson, Tim Shelton and Davis Lipscombe. Doug Johnson picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his ninth place finish.

In the Sunoco Race Fuels / Bazell Oil Qualifying Race no.1 for the USA 100, Rickey Elliott and Pete Ivey led the 19 car field to green with Elliott winning the drag race into turn 1 to take the lead. Caution would fly quikly on lap 1 for a spin by Scott LeBarron collecting both Louie Littlepage and Dale Lingo.

On the double restart Elliott once again out dueled Ivey once again to take the lead. On lap five Jason Dupont brought out the caution with a flat in turn 2. On the restart Elliott once again won the race to turn 1 but caution would come out this time for Dupont flipping several times in the middle of turn one and two collecting Sean Cosgrove, Dupont, Daryl Hills and Rob Schirmer.

On the restart Elliott once again took the lead in turn 1 over Ivey as Bob Salathe and Denny Chamberlain went at it for third. On lap 7 Salathe finally took third from Chamberlain. On lap 8 Jimmy Bernheisel worked his way into fifth with a pass on Mark Pettyjohn.

With everyone fighting for position in third on back Elliott was able to pull away, taking the first qualifier by 8 car lengths over Ivey, Salathe, Bernheisel and Booper Bare.

In the Goddard Performance Parts / Warrior Race Cars Qualifying Race no.2 Ronnie Dehaven and Brent Robinson led the eighteen car field to green as the two raced into turn two, as they exited the corner Dehaven tried to slide up in front of Robinson with the two touching and sending Dehaven for a spin down the back stretch, ending his night.

On the restart Bo Feathers slide up to the pole beside Robinson and led the field back to green. Robinson won the drag race to lead the first lap with Feathers battling back on the bottom. On lap 3 Feathers wrestled the lead away from Robinson with Jeremy Miller following to second. On lap 5 Mike Balzano moved into third and that’s when things got busy.

On lap 9, with the crowd on their feet, all three were together and battling for the lead. On lap 10 Balzano took second from Miller and set out for Feathers. On lap 12 Miller took second back and went after Feathers on the bottom side by side. Feathers using the high side held on to the lead. On lap 15 the battle went three wide with Balzano on the high side. But Feathers had just enough to hold on for the win over Miller, Balzano, Jason Covert and Doug Dodd.
