South Boston Speedway News
Drew Herring posts 8th Late Model Stock Car win of season, takes over lead in title chase at South Boston
Aug 19, 2006 - updated Aug 19th, 2006 11:47pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

What a difference a week makes.

Last weekend, Drew Herring of Benson, N.C. wrecked his racecar and fell from atop the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division point standings at South Boston Speedway.

Saturday night, Herring grabbed the pole position for the featured attraction of the 3M presents Back to School 150 and led every lap of the event to score his eighth triumph of the season.

The victory by Herring, coupled with a 14th-place finish by Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C., enabled Herring to erase an eight-point deficit and overtake Cash in the chase for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series championship at America's Hometown Track.

The race was extended to 154 laps in order for the event to finish with a two-lap green-flag shootout. The final caution period was set up when the car of Scott Turlington of Richmond, Va. spun around in turn two and collected the ride of Cash. Prior to the incident, Cash was running in fourth place and would have managed to maintain a slim edge in the point standings with a top four finish.

Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. posted a second-place run in the 19-car field after starting the event from the ninth slot. Smith, who enjoyed his best finish of the campaign, worked his way into the runner-up position with a pass of Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. on the 112th circuit.

Barker wound up finishing third in the unofficial rundown, while Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va., who posted a win last weekend, finished in fourth place.

Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J. motored to a fifth-place finish in the race and was followed by Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. in the sixth-place spot. Cook was the final driver on the lead lap.

Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va. was seventh at the close of the race, while Owen Miller of Emporia, Va. finished eighth. Brandon Dean of Lancaster, S.C. placed ninth, while Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va. rounded out the top 10 drivers. Dickerson, Miller, Dean and Bailey were all one lap down.

The race had plenty of fireworks earlier in the evening when the cars of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Timothy Peters or Providence, N.C. and Speedy Faucette of Mebane, N.C. got together. Faucette had bumped Peters prior to the lap seven incident, but went spinning into the wall after contact from Peters, which brought out the yellow flag for the second time in the early stages of the race.

During the caution period, Faucette jumped on the hood of Peters' machine as he headed toward the pits. Faucette wound up 18th in the field and Peters, who parked his ride after the wreck, finished in the 17th position. Peters was assessed a stop and go penalty after the incident and, once he went a lap down to the field, opted to park for the night.

Bruce Anderson leads from flag-to-flag to tally

10th Limited Sportsman Division win of the season

Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. was fast during qualifying time trials and he continued to sizzle during the 50-lap Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division race.

Anderson started from the pole position for the race after clocking a time trial lap of 16.114 seconds. Anderson surged to the lead on the opening lap and held on all the way to take the checkered flag first in the race that was slowed by two caution periods. The victory was the 10th of the season for Anderson, who sits atop the division's point standings.

Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. qualified sixth in the nine-car field, but battled through the field to claim a runner-up finish. Willis moved to the second-place position on the 28th circuit of the race.

Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. began the race from the outside of the front row and wound up third, while Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. placed fourth. Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. rounded out the top five drivers in the nine-car field.

Jeff Wilson roars from eighth starting spot after

inversion to claim victory in Pure Stock Division

Jeff Wilson of Durham, N.C. set the fast time in qualifying for the 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race, but started from the eighth slot following a pre-race inversion.

That didn't appear to bother Wilson, who battled through the pack to score a victory. Wilson moved into the lead position on the track on lap 19 and held on the remainder of the way in the event, which was slowed by two cautions.

Mark Francisco of Halifax, Va. collected a second-place finish in the 17-car field and was followed by three-time winner Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., the division's points leader, in the third position.

Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va., who has collected two victories this season, placed fourth after starting from the pole position, while Keith Langston of Pittsboro, N.C. rounded out the top five drivers in the race.

Dowdy holds off Thompson to post Grand Stock win

Troy Dowdy of Concord, Va. swiped the lead from pole position winner Ray Ellington, Jr. of Madison Heights, Va. on the 10th lap and held on the rest of the way to score a victory in the 30-lap race for the Grand Stock Division.

Dowdy posted the win, but not before holding off a stiff challenge from Robert Thompson over the final few laps. Thompson held on the place second in the eight-car field.

Ellington posted a third-place finish in the final rundown and was followed in fourth place by Steve Worley.

Michael Cooper posts Allison Legacy Series victory

Michael Cooper started outside on the front row for the 50-lap race for the touring Allison Legacy Series, but wound up in Victory Lane when the checkered flag fell.

Cooper worked his way past pole sitter Nicholas Pope on the 26th circuit and held on the remainder of the way to collect the win.

Pope finished second in the 23-car field, while Jonathan Kornegay finished third after starting from the fifth position.

Brandon McReynolds managed a fourth-place run in the event, while Casey Holt, the points leader in the series entering the race, rounded out the top five finishers. Holt started the race from the rear of the field after spinning during qualifying time trials.
