Langley Speedway SunTrust 100 Late Model race set for 8/19

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

(Aug. 17) — A 100-lap feature for the Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models tops the bill this Saturday, Aug. 19, as Langley Speedway hosts SunTrust Night at the Races, the 16th program on the track’s 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series schedule.
In addition to the Late Model headliner, Saturday’s five-race slate includes: NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); Verizon Super Trucks (25 laps); Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps); and, E-Z Auto Rental UCARs (25 laps).
As part of this week’s pre-race festivities, the Rev. Tom Potter, track chaplain, will lead a “Track-A-Thon” to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Sponsored participants will join Rev. Potter for a two-lap stroll around the track. Prizes will be awarded to the participant with the most sponsors, the sponsor giving the largest donation, the participant bringing in the most money, etc.

Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. The drivers meeting starts at 4, followed by time trials at 4:15. Pre-race activities begin at 6:30 and the races get going at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 17. Pit gates open at 5 p.m. and practice runs until dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday evening practice sessions are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

Saturday’s SunTrust 100 Late Model race will be the fifth of six extended-distance events on the division’s ‘06 schedule. Mark Wertz and Casey Wyatt have split the first four races with each driver capturing two wins. Wyatt, however, may not have a chance to go for his third 100-lap victory this week.

When presented with a Dodge cap to wear for winner’s circle photos after last week’s Dodge Night event, Chevy-driving Wyatt reportedly expressed strong anti-Mopar sentiments and refused to don the apparel, while several local Dodge dealer representatives looked on.
(In addition to sponsoring Langley’s Aug. 12 program, Dodge is, of course, the primary backer of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series.)
Word of the incident quickly reached NASCAR headquarters in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Jerry Cook, the sanctioning body’s longtime Competition Administrator, responded on Wednesday afternoon, suspending Wyatt from the next two Langley Late Model races. Also, Wyatt is barred from participating in any NASCAR-sanctioned event through Aug. 30 and will be on probation until the end of 2006.
For Wyatt, a six-time race winner this season, the suspension would dash any chance he had of claiming the ‘06 track championship. Currently, he ranks fourth in the points rundown, 58 behind leader Wertz. Tossing out the two-worst finishes, as will be done for all Late Model drivers at the end of the season, the margin shrinks to 26. Races missed due to a suspension, however, cannot be dropped.

Wyatt could file an appeal of the suspension and, perhaps, be allowed to race until the appeal is heard. As it stands now, though, his status for this Saturday’s race is, at best, uncertain.
• • •
Dale Parro will be looking to end his string of five straight second-place finishes in this week’s Super Street feature. Parro, who has yet to collect a checkered flag this season, trails Tommy Sweeney by only six points in the division standings.
• • •
Carl “The Red Bull” Livingston will try to get back on the winning track in Saturday’s Super Truck 25-lapper. Bill Mullis snapped Livingston’s four-race winning streak in the division’s last outing, on July 29. Livingston holds a 26-point lead over Justin Ballo in the current points rundown.
• • •
Another driver looking to return to his winning ways will be INEX Legends pilot Cameron Patrick. His two-race streak ended on Aug. 5 when Don McLaughlin muscled him aside on the final lap. Patrick is up by 20 points over McLaughlin in the series standings.
• • •
INEX Legends drivers who were planning to compete in October’s Asphalt Nationals got a jolt when it was announced that their Langley points season had been extended to Oct. 7, creating a scheduling conflict. Speedway officials quickly rectified the situation, though.
The Legends will still be in action at Langley on Oct. 7, but the event will be a non-points affair, freeing drivers to go to the national championship meet. The last Langley Legends points race will be on Sept. 23, as originally scheduled.
• • •
The UCAR class will be on hand for the second week in row this Saturday. They’ll wrap up a three-race stand on Aug. 26. Six-time race winner Randy Prillaman holds a commanding 40-point edge over Robbie Davis in the UCAR title chase.

Langley Speedway has released more details about the “Inaugural Virginia State UCAR All-Star Challenge,” slated for Saturday, Oct. 14., and expected to draw UCARs from across the region.
The featured event will be a 50-lapper with a 30-car starting field. Positions 1-20 will be determined in time trials, while the top-five finishers in a pair of 20-lap heat races will fill positions 21-30.

The feature winner will pocket $1,000 — pretty good for a division in which the customary top prize is a trophy. The second- and third-place finishers will get $500 and $250, respectively. Heat race winners will receive trophies, while sixth-place heat race finishers (the first drivers who won’t advance to the feature) will get $125.
Langley Speedway’s UCAR Safety Rules only will apply to all entries. 195/60/14 tires will be required. (The Langley UCAR track tire is the Sumitomo HTR 200, which will be available.) Also, see Langley’s UCAR rules for a list of makes and models that will be eligible to compete.
The entry fee for the event is $50 and includes pit admission for the driver. Pit admission for crew members is $25. All home track licenses will be honored (accompanied by a picture ID). For drivers from tracks that don’t issue licenses, one-day Langley licenses will be available.
For spectators, general admission grandstand tickets are attractively priced at only $5.
• • •
Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program continues on Aug. 23. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15 and general admission grandstand tickets are $8. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.
• • •
NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 26, with Coca-Cola Night at the Races. The feature lineup includes: Late Models, Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Super Trucks, UCARs and Wolf Trucks. As an added attraction, staffers from “Down Home, American Living” magazine will be on hand with loads of giveaways.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
