Faster Pastor Proves To Be Fastest In Rd 3 Of Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge
Aug 7, 2006 - updated Aug 7th, 2006 2:22pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, VA --

With many of his congregation in the stands cheering him on, the “Faster Pastor” Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA proved that he was the fastest during Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T at Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway in beautiful Jamaica, VA, by taking round three in a flag to flag victory.

Cohick, an ordained minister, has been fast all year long; in fact Cohick had already won four races heading into Round 3 of the Challenge Series. But winning a leg of the challenge series means a chance at a $5000 bonus.

The inversion after hot lap qualifying put Cohick and Troy Williams on the front row leading the field to green. Cohick won the drag race into turn 1 with Ronald Cusic following to second. A caution on lap 5 closed the field back up on the leader. On the restart Cohick pulled away with Round one winner Jared Powell diving to the inside of Cusic in turn 1 only to give the spot back in turn 4. On lap 7 Powell finally took second with a strong move to the inside.

Caution on lap 10 closed the field back up again on the bumper of Cohick. On the restart with Cohick pulling away Powell slide up in turn 2 allowing Cusic to retake second. With Cohick in control, the battle was for second with Cusic, Powell, Chuck Beech and Stevie Long.

By lap 15 Cohick had an eight car length advantage over Cusic and the rest of the field. On lap 21 Beech took third form Powell followed by Long to fourth and relegating Powell to fifth.

A late caution for Jamie Lathroum closed the field one for the last time on Cohick's bumper and setting up a two lap dash for the cash. On the restart Cusic tried desperately to get to the inside of Cohick as the two raced down into turn 1. Cusic got a nose to the inside of Cohick's rear quarter panel but that's as far as he could advance. Cohick motored on to his fifth win of the season. With his victory Cohick is now eligible for a $5000 bonus along with Powell and Tom Eriksen if any of the three can win round 4 when it rolls around on September 1st.

“This is absolutely awesome, first I have to thank God, and he blesses me so much each and every day. The car was just flawless tonight,” commented Cohick. When asked about getting into his current ride during round two and his previous ride winning Cohick interjected, “ You know we were leading that thing pretty convincingly when we broke something in the motor, so we could have two wins already if it were not for the mechanical failure in round two, but we'll take this win and try to build on it in round four.”

Rounding out the top five were Ronald Cusic, Stevie Long, Donnie Marshall and Jared Powell. Walker Arthur picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his eleventh place finish.

In other action Walker Arthur of Forest, VA started sixth in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature after setting fast time in the division for the ninth time and the inversion. On the drop of the green flag Arthur quickly worked his way to the front. On lap 5 Arthur caught Donnie Owens making a pass out of turn 4 to take the lead.

Roger Jamerson then went to work on Owens for second taking the position on lap 8. After taking second Jamerson worked to close the gap on the leader Arthur. Cautions helped close the field on several occasions, with Jamerson trying on each restart to get past Arthur. While the top two tussled over the lead, Owens, Larry Bradsher, Okey Synan Jr. and Daren Bolac waged war for third on back.

But it was Arthur holding on for his eighth win of the season with Jamerson, Owens, Bolac and Synan rounding out the top five. Shawn Otey picked up his first Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his eighth place finish.

In the Al's Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature Brian Maxey and Jim Ridings led the field to green with Maxey, John Imler and Davis Lipscombe three wide and door-to-door for the lead. Maxey led lap one by inches with Imler taking the lead on lap 2. Caution would come out for Ernie Dettbarn losing a tire in turn 4.

On the restart Maxey went inside Imler heading into turn 1 to retake the lead followed by Lipscombe. On lap 4 Lipscombe took the lead and began to pull away with Maxey and Bob Terry now battling for second. On lap 6 Terry took second from Maxey. With almost a 10-car length advantage Lipscombe brought out the caution with a spin in turn 2 handing the lead to Terry. On the restart Terry slowed allowing Maxey by for the lead but in turn 3 Terry got back by to regain the top spot. With three to go the top two were pulling away form the rest of the field. On lap 22 Maxey muscled his way inside of Terry to take the lead with two to go, holding off Terry for the final two circuits to pick up his first victory in 2006.

Rounding out the top five were Terry, Mark Wright, Jim Ridings and Davis Lipscombe. Wesley Givens picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with a fifteenth place finish.

In the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature Dustin Owens of North, VA took the lead from Byard Harris on lap 2 and then held off a determined Marty Coltrain to capture his sixth win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Rick Thompson, Thomas Rose and Byard Harris.
