Drew Herring strikes again

South Boston, VA. --

Drew Herring wins fifth straight Late Model Stock Car event at SoBo to move atop NASCAR point standings

The Benson, N.C. Late Model Stock Car Division driver grabbed the lead on the second circuit of the 150-lap Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division and held on the rest of the way to score his fifth straight victory.

The win, Herring's seventh victory in the past eight Late Model Stock Car races, came in the featured attraction of the Randy Waller Memorial 150 presented by Charles Anderson Lawn Car Service.

In addition to claiming his fifth consecutive triumph, Herring also moved atop the point standings in the chase for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series crown at America's Hometown Track.

Herring entered the night with a $1,000 bounty hanging over him. If anyone else in the 21-car starting field had claimed a victory, an additional $1,000 would have been awarded on top of the $3,000 first prize. The bounty on Herring will grow to $1,500 for the Aug. 5 Late Model Stock Car Division event at South Boston.

Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. surged from a seventh starting position in the field to claim a runner-up finish. The second-place showing came on the heels of a third-place finish by Barker in his last race on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Eddie Johnson of Ashland, Va., who began the race from the 15th starting slot, battled his way through the field during the race and managed a third-place run for the night. Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. was fourth at the checkered flag and was followed in the top five by Owen Miller of Emporia, Va.

Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C., who entered the night as the division's point leader, turned in a dismal qualifying effort and started the night in the 19th position. Cash fought his way through the pack to secure a sixth-place performance, however, his 10 point lead over Herring was wiped out in the process.

Herring and Cash, who is still seeking his first victory of the campaign, are now tied atop the point standings. Herring's seven triumphs this season give him the top spot in the standings by virtue of a tiebreaker.

Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va., who started from the pole position in the race with a qualifying run of 15.864 seconds, stayed in the second position on the track until Barker grabbed the spot on the 64th circuit. Dickerson wound up slipping back to a seventh place finish.

Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. was eighth for the night and was followed in the top 10 by Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. in ninth place and Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va. in the 10th position.

The race was slowed by four cautions, the last of which flew on lap 112 when debris was spotted in the backstretch.

Justin Snow ends Bruce Anderson's dominance, scores 1st Limited Sportsman Division victory of season

Justin Snow of Danville, Va. picked up some extra cash Saturday night when he snapped a win streak by Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. by collecting a victory in the 50-lap race for the Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division.

Snow started from the pole position in the 10-car field and, after fighting side-by-side with Anderson for seven laps, moved in front for good on the eighth circuit to pick up his first win of the season at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

The win was worth an extra $500 in cash for Snow. The $500 was bounty money that was added to the regular purse for any driver who could defeat Anderson, the winner of nine of the division's first 12 races this season.

Anderson, who spun out on lap nine, while battling Matt Lofton of Timberlake, N.C. for second place, went to the rear of the field and stormed back to the front to gain a runner-up finish and maintain his lead in the division's point race.

Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. finished third in the 10-car field and was followed in the top five by Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. in fourth place and Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. in the fifth position. Falk began the race for the ninth starting spot, while Langford began the event from the eighth position.

Quain Moore holds off point leader Chuck Watkins in two-lap dash to score first Pure Stock Division triumph

Quain Moore of Callands, Va. led every lap of the Pure Stock Division event to score his first triumph of the season Saturday night.

The win did not come easy for Moore, however. Before taking the checkered flag and the win, he had to hold off several stiff challenges from three-time victor Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., who placed second in the 15-car field and maintained his lead in the division point standings. Watkins started the race in the 10th spot.

The race was slowed by five cautions periods, including two late yellow flags, which extended the event to 31 laps to ensure a green-white-checker finish at the end.

Moore qualified eighth for the race, but gained the pole position after a pre-race inversion was held. Justin Tucker of Elon, N.C. turned in the fast qualifying time during time trials and battled back from the eighth position to secure a third place run.

Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va. was fourth for the night, while William Ridgeway of Burlington, N.C. rounded out the top five.

Goess posts victory in INEX Legends Series event

Craig Goess, Jr. of Greenville, N.C. turned in the fast qualifying time prior to the 25-lap race for the touring INEX Legends Series race and proceeded to lead every lap of the event to score a victory.

Cameron Patrick of Yorktown, Va. placed second in the 12-car field, while Darrell Wallace, Jr. of Concord, N.C., who started the race from the outside pole spot, finished in third place. Jeremy Cook of Hampton, Va. wound up fourth at the close of the race.
