South Boston Speedway News
Former South Boston Speedway champ Timothy Peters set to compete Saturday
Jul 27, 2006 - updated Jul 27th, 2006 12:43pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

When the green flag falls for the start of the Randy Waller Memorial presented by Charles Anderson Lawn Care Saturday night at South Boston Speedway, current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Timothy Peters will be in the field for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division event.

Peters, the 2004 South Boston Speedway NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series champion, and other Late Model Stock Car Division competitors will be gunning to collect a $4,000 paycheck in the 150-lap race, which will be the featured attraction of the evening. The first race of the night at America's Hometown Track will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

The normal purse for winning a Late Model Stock Car race at South Boston Speedway is $3,000. However, any Late Model Stock Car driver who can defeat Drew Herring, who has won four straight races, in Saturday's event can claim a total purse of $4,000. The additional money available is a bounty on Herring, who has won six of the past seven Late Model Stock Car races.

"South Boston has a lot of history and I just love the track," Peters said. "I would race every weekend if I could find something to drive.

"My friend, Chad Kendrick, who works on the No. 18 Fastenal Dodge as the jackman at Bobby Hamilton Racing, had his Late Model available to drive this weekend," Peters added. "I convinced him to let me run it with the help of Bailey's.

"It will be fun to go back and run with some of my buddies," Peters continued. "My [Craftsman Truck Series] crew chief Marcus Richmond is going to call the shots and it will be like old times. I am really looking forward to it. I can tell you one thing I am going up there to win."

To win, however, Peters, who currently pilots the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge owned by Bobby Hamilton in the Craftsman Truck Series, will have to beat the likes of Herring and many other of the top Late Model Stock Car competitors in the region.

Herring is now just 10 points behind current division leader Jonathan Cash, who is seeking his first triumph of the campaign. Owen Miller is third in the Late Model standings, just two points behind Herring and only eight points ahead of fourth-place Jon Denning, a two-time winner this year. Rodney Cook rounds out the top five drivers in the Late Model Stock Car point standings.

Bounty money will also be available in the 50-lap race for the Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway. A $500 bounty has been placed on division points leader Bruce Anderson, who has won nine of the division's 12 races thus far this season.

Also slated for action Saturday night will be the Budweiser Pure Stock Division drivers and the competitors in the touring INEX Legends Series, who have put on some very tight races in their past two visits to South Boston Speedway.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:15 p.m.

Adult admission for the race will be $8 up to 6:30 p.m. and $10 after that. Youth, ages 10-15, will be admitted for $5 and children under the age of 10 will be admitted free with a paid adult.

For more information, visit the speedway’s website at www.southbostonspeedway.com or phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
