NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Langley Speedway

Wednesday, July 19, 2006

Local police officers will be honored this Saturday, July 22, as Langley Speedway continues its 2006 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series schedule with Law Enforcement Appreciation Night.
Saturday’s four-race feature lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service/Sunoco Dealers Late Models (75 laps); NTELOS Wireless Super Streets (50 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); and, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends (25 laps).
As an added attraction, an assortment of vehicles from area police departments will be on display and will participate in a parade lap before Saturday’s program gets going.
Gates open at 12 noon and practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. Qualifying starts at 4. Pre-race festivities begin at 6:30 and the first feature event goes green at 7.
Tickets are $10 for adults ($8 for active-duty or retired military members with ID) and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, military members in uniform are admitted free. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are $30 each. There is no charge for parking.

Langley Speedway’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, July 20. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and practice runs from 5 ‘til dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license and $20 without a current competition license. There is no charge to watch practice rounds from the grandstands.
Summaries of Thursday night practice sessions are available on the track's Web site, www.langley-speedway.com. In the menu on the homepage, click on "Results," then follow the appropriate links. Practice results are posted shortly after the end of each week's session.

With his win in last week’s Late Model feature, Danny Edwards pulled even with Mark Wertz atop the division standings. While both drivers have collected 548 points, Wertz still enjoys a slight advantage by virtue of his 4-2 edge in race wins (the first tiebreaker).
It’s important to note, however, that drivers will be dropping their two worst finishes (or missed races) from points consideration at the end of the season.
Tossing out the title contenders’ two worst outings, Wertz would still hold first place with 478. Greg Edwards would jump from third to second with 474, while Danny Edwards would fall to third with 468.
The biggest beneficiary of dropping races, though, is Casey Wyatt, who currently ranks fifth, 52 points out of the lead. Erasing his two worst events (a 16th and a 17th), he vaults to fourth, only 20 points behind Wertz.

Dale Parro will be gunning for his first victory of the season in Saturday’s Super Street race. He is riding a streak of four straight runner-up finishes and is four behind leader Tommy Sweeney in the points rundown, 288-284.
• • •
With two races in the books, Buddy Emory leads the Modified standings by two points over Shawn Balluzzo, 96-94. Emory has posted two second-place finishes. Behind Emory and Balluzzo, five more drivers are within 16 points of the division lead.
• • •
Cameron Patrick will look to continue his recent hot streak in Saturday’s INEX Legends event. He has won the last two races and three of the last four. He holds a 24-point lead over Don McLaughlin in the standings, 292-268. Ryan Crites ranks third with 266, followed by fourth-place Jeremy Cook with 264.

Interrupted by foul weather on July 19, Langley Speedway’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” program resumes on July 26. The lineup features “1-on-1 Drags,” “Time Attacks” (solo runs against the clock) and a “Burnout Competition.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Pit admission is $15 and general admission grandstand tickets are $8. Kids under 6 are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by an adult.

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, July 29, with USG Night. That evening’s lineup is topped by a Late Model 100-lapper. The Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks, Verizon Super Trucks and E-Z Auto Rental UCARs will also be in action, while the Pro 6 Series will lead off the night’s activities at 6:30 p.m. Also, the Virginia Chevy Lovers will on hand for a vehicle display and parade lap.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
