Herring holds off bounty hunters, claims 4th straight Late Model Stock Car triumph at South Boston Speedway

South Boston, VA. --

It wasn't easy, but it was still another Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division victory for Drew Herring Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

After winning the past three Late Model Stock Car Division events at America's Hometown Track, Herring, who resides in Benson, N.C., entered the featured attraction of the Embarq 150 presented by Bob FM Saturday night with a $500 bounty hanging over his head. Any driver that could beat Herring to the checkered flag could have claimed the bounty in addition to the regular purse.

When the race ended, however, it was Herring posting his fourth straight triumph. The win in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series event was also Herring's sixth in his last seven starts.

Herring started from the fourth position in the 21-car field, but had moved into second place just past the midpoint. He then swiped the advantage from pole position winner Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C. on the 116th circuit and held on to first place the remainder of the way.

Cash motored to a runner-up finish in the field and took over sole possession of the lead in the division's point lead. Herring moved into second place in the standings, just ahead of Owen Miller of Emporia, Va., who entered the night tied with Cash for first place in the standings, but slipped to third on the heels of an eighth-place finish.

Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. started from the outside of the front row in the race and collected a third-place finish for the night, while Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. recorded a fourth-place run.

Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J. finished fifth at the checkered flag and was followed by Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. in the sixth slot and Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. in seventh place.

Miller was eighth at the finish line and was followed in the top 10 by Eddie Johnson of Ashland, Va. in ninth place and Cliff Daniels of Smithfield, Va. in the 10th position.

Daniels was the final driver on the lead lap and roared from the rear of the field at the outset of the race to score his second straight 10th place performance.

The final 80 laps of the race were run under the green flag after the lone caution period flew earlier in the event when the motor of the car driven by Wayne Patterson of Chesterfield, Va. went sour and dropped fluid on the asphalt.

Bruce Anderson continues dominance in Limited Sportsman Division after sweeping twin 50-lap races

Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. continued to dominate the Strutmasters.com Limited Sportsman Division Saturday night.

Anderson started from the front row in each of the twin 50-lap races for the Limited Sportsman Division competitors and rolled to triumphs in each of the events.

The two wins gave Anderson nine wins in 12 attempts this season at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval and enabled him to pad his growing lead in the chase for the division's point title.

Justin Snow of Danville, Va. started from the pole position for the opening 50-lap race, but lost the lead to Anderson on the third circuit and had to settle for a runner-up finish.

Danny Willis, Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. finished third in the 11-car field for the opening 50-lap race, while Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. motored to a fourth-place run in the caution-free event. Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. rounded out the top five drivers in the first 50-lapper.

Anderson started from the pole position in the nightcap and led every circuit in the race, which was slowed by just one caution when debris was reported on the track on lap 22.

Willis surged by Snow for second place on lap 32 and motored to a runner-up performance, while Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. placed third in the second 50-lap race.

Langford recorded a fourth-place run in the second race and was followed in the top five by Wesley Falk of Virginia Beach, Va. in the fifth slot.

Lee Anderson leads flag-to-flag in Pure Stock race

Lee Anderson of Gladys, Va. qualified ninth, but started from the pole position in the 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division following a pre-race inversion.

Anderson led every lap of the caution-free race to beat Corey Loveday of Cullen, Va. to the checkered flag. The runner-up finish by Loveday was his best of the campaign.

Chuck Watkins of Stem, N.C., the point leader in the division, made a late-race pass to score a third-place finish in the 12-car field, while Justin Tucker of Elon, N.C. placed fourth and was followed in the top five by Quain Moore of Callands, Va.

Moore posted the best qualifying time prior to the race with a time trial run of 18.819 seconds. He began the ninth following the pre-race inversion of the field.

Gregory scores win in Legendary Flatheads event

Johnny Gregory of Rural Hall, N.C. started fourth in the 20-lap race for the touring Legendary Ford Flathead Series, grabbed the lead on the opening circuit and led the remainder of the way to the checkered flag.

Only two of the nine cars that began the race were on the lead lap at the end of the event.

Bill Blair of Thomasville, N.C. started sixth and grabbed a second-place run, while Clayton Smith of King, N.C. finished in third place and was the winner in the Sportsman Division on the four-tenths mile oval. Gregory was the victor in the Modified Division competition.

Carlton Pugh of Gretna, Va. rounded out the top four drivers in the race.
