Local AMA National Rider Coming Off Big Win Heading Into Home Track Race At Virginia Motor Speedway
Jul 14, 2006 - updated Jul 14th, 2006 4:47pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Saluda, VA. --

Mike Hacker of Colonial Heights, VA has been waiting a long time for an AMA Grand National race to be held near his hometown. He has also been waiting and working towards getting back in victory lane on the national tour after injuries have hampered his efforts over the past four years.

Both waits are over, as Hacker rode his SuperTrapp / Doc’s Harley-Davidson / Tom Norton sponsored Harley to his fourth career Grand National win this past weekend at West Virginia Motor Speedway and Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will host the 1st Annual Burcham Cycles Joe Weatherly Memorial presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. at the ½ mile dirt track in Saluda, VA this Saturday July 15th.

“I don’t know what to say. I never thought I’d win a National this year,” said the thirty year old Colonial Heights, VA resident. “I thought this year would be spent getting back into condition and next year would be the one. The win adds a ton of pressure heading into a race at my home track and in front of all my friends, I hope I didn’t use up all my luck.”

Hacker, a Prince George High School grad and Colonial Heights resident, is excited about showing his hometown fan base what he really does for a living. The venue, for the first visit by the AMA Grand National tour to the State of Virginia in more than 36 years, impresses Hacker in more ways than one.

“What a great track. I mean, you couldn’t ask for a better track for what we do. The enthusiasm in wanting to make this thing go is so great. I’m really excited about being able to race in my hometown, but also race at a place where they want to make this deal a regular stop on the tour and they’re doing everything they can to insure that,” Hacker said.

And Hacker knows what the AMA Flat Track motorcycle tour can bring to the area. “I know that nobody will walk away dissatisfied after that main event.”

Competitor gates for Saturday, July 15th will open at 2pm with spectator gates opening at 3pm. On track activities will begin at 5:00pm with timed practice. Heat races will start at 7:30pm. Classes scheduled to race on Saturday: AMA Ford Quality Checked Grand National 750cc Class (25 Laps) and AMA Pro Sport Invitational Class (12 Laps). Grand National class will run a full program of heats; semi’s and feature while the Pro Sport Invitational will consist of heats and feature.

Reserved seat and general admission tickets are currently on sale between the hours of 9am and 4pm until Friday July 14th. The ticket window on Saturday July 15th will open at 2pm. Great seats are still available. Reserved seat tickets are $30 with general admission going for $26. Mastercard and Visa are accepted. The top ten rows on the front stretch are reserved seating; all others will be general admission. Fans can purchase tickets by calling (804) 758-1867 or by coming by the speedway’s office.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a 1/2-mile, dirt oval. The track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.

To learn more about Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway and its 2006 schedule of events, fans and competitors may call the Speedway office at (804) 758-1VMS or visit the track online at www.vamotorspeedway.com.
