“Faster Pastor” Makes Late Race Pass For Late Model Win At Virginia Motor Speedway

Saluda, VA --

They don’t call him the “Faster Pastor” for nothing as Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA, an ordained minister, had enough horsepower and patience to take home his fourth win of the season in the Victory Lap Late Model division at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway in Saluda, VA.



In other action Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC picked up his second win in a row in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature. In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature eighth place starting Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA continued his domination with his seventh win of the season and fourth in a row and in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature Rick Thompson of New Kent, VA picked up his career first victory.



Walker Arthur of Forest, VA set fast time in Hot Lap Qualifying and inverting the top four for the start of the race. Larry Grimstead and Tom Cohick led the field to green with Arthur jumping to the outside to make it three wide. Arthur would gain control of the three wide battle to grab the lead in turn 3 followed closely by Cohick.



A caution on lap 6 for Grimstead closed the field and ignited a battle for the third spot between Jared Powell, Stevie Long and Jamie Lathroum. On the restart Long went inside Powell for third and then began to work on Cohick for second. By lap 12 Powell was back looking inside Long for third but got loose and lost two positions.



Arthur meanwhile had Cohick dogging him for the top spot. On lap 18 Cohick got a good look but Arthur kept him at bay. On lap 20 Powell worked his way back into position to battle Long for third and took the position with a pass out of turn 4.



With 10 to go the top three of Arthur, Cohick and Powell began to pull away from the rest of the field. On lap 27 Cohick dove under Arthur in turn four and pulled even in turn 2. For the next four laps the two raced side by side, swapping the lead several times at the line by inches each pass. Cohick finally took control on lap 31 of the 35-lap affair out of turn two and held off Arthur for the win by .104 seconds.



“This is a lot of fun when your side by side, Walker was pushing it pretty hard and I was just riding because I didn’t have anything for him early, once I got some heat in the tires I could stalk him down, I got up under him a couple of times and he drove in a little bit hard but he did a super job, he held it out there and down here on the bottom of turns one and two I was in there but I would have slid right into him and I had to lift to let him go back by but that’s what you call racing, because you have respect for one another and that’s what makes it fun,” commented a very excited Cohick in victory lane.



Rounding out the top five were Arthur, Jared Powell, Stevie Long and Ronald Cusic. Arthur picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.



In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature was full of excitement as Walker Arthur of Forest, VA set fast time once again this time inverting the top six for the start. Jack Foulkes and Roger Jamerson led the field to green with Jamerson grabbing control as Foulkes had a gaggle of cars trying to take away second.



Arthur took the second spot away from Foulkes and began to reel in Jamerson. A caution on lap seven closed up the field. On the restart the battle for the top spot began as Arthur kept applying the pressure on Jamerson looking both inside and out.



The two battled fiercely until a caution came out on lap 17. On the restart Arthur got under Jamerson and looked to have him cleared but was spun bringing out the caution and sending both drivers to the rear for the restart.



That handed the lead over to Daren Bolac with Okey Synan, Jr. Foulkes, Donnie Owens and Chris Stacy in tow. Bolac would lead the final twelve laps to pick up his second win of the season and second in a row. Rounding out the top five were Okey Synan, Jr., Donnie Owens, Jack Foulkes and Dave Savage. Savage picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.



Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA continues to dominate the Al’s Auto Parts Charger division and Bob Terry of Stafford, VA continues to come up just short of a win.



Lipscombe started eighth once again after winning for the third time in a row. David McKinnon and 14 year old rookie Wesley Givens led the filed to green with Givens leading the first lap. Coming through the field quickly was Terry who took the lead from Givens on lap 2.



By lap six Terry held a six-car length advantage on Lipscombe but it didn’t last long as caution brought the field back on his bumper. On the restart Lipscombe began to feel out Terry, working him high and low. A couple of cautions kept the two close and on the lap 12 restart Lipscombe made his move and jumped outside Terry. The two raced side by side until Lipcombe took the lead out of turn 4 for good leading the final 12 laps for his seventh win of the season and fourth in a row. Rounding out the top five were Bob Terry, Wesley Givens, James Givens and Ernie Dettbarn. Wesley Givens picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.



The Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature had heat race winners Thomas Rose and Rick Thompson leading the field to green with Rose leading the initial lap. On lap 3 Rose got loose in turn allowing Thompson to dive under him for the lead followed closely by Marty Coltrain.



By lap 10 the battle was for second between Coltrain and Vernon Kirby with Dustin Owens and Rose joining in on the battle. The races third and final caution fell on lap 13 when Owens spun with help from Rose. Both driver went to the rear of the field for the green, white, checkered finish.



On the restart Thompson had Coltrain all over him for the lead but held him off for his first career victory. Rounding out the top five were Marty Coltrain, Vernon Kirby, Brett Adkins and Johnny Brooks, Jr.



This coming Saturday July 15th Virginia Motor Speedway will host perhaps the most anticipated event in the 37-year history of the speedway. The 1st Annual Burcham Cycles Joe Weatherly Memorial presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. will be held at the ½ mile dirt track in Saluda, VA and sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. It will mark the first time in 36 years that the AMA Ford Quality Checked Grand National Motorcycle tour has visited the State of Virginia.



Competitor gates for Saturday, July 15th will open at 2pm with ticket office opening at 2pm and spectator gates opening at 3pm. On track activities will begin at 5:00pm with timed practice. Heat races will start at 7:30pm. Classes scheduled to race on Saturday: AMA Ford Quality Checked Grand National 750cc Class (25 Laps); AMA Pro Sport Invitational Class (12 Laps). Grand National class will run a full program of heats; semi’s and feature while the Pro Sport Invitational will consist of heats and feature.



Reserved seat and general admission tickets are currently on sale. Great seats are still available. Reserved seat tickets are $30 with general admission going for $26. Mastercard and Visa are accepted. The top ten rows on the front stretch are reserved seating; all others will be general admission. Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a 1/2-mile, dirt oval. The track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
